Overclocking Gurus...help me!!!!

Hie guys, here's the situation. I've got a T-bird(Dunno which core) 800 running at 850Mhz using 1.80V and it's stable. When I tried to bump the multiplier to 9X100 and Vcore to 1.85, the system will post but it will give some IOS protection error while booting into windows. I'm trying to get it to work but to no avail. Tried slowing down the Ram settings but it makes no difference. What fan is good for overclocking? The Fop32 is good but many say that putting the HSF on is gonna take hell of a time and strength to do so??

Is it wise to bump my voltage to 1.90V??? My PC specs are as written as below.

sure do 1.90V, just pay attention to the cpu temp.

i've seen them at 2.05V, as long as super-cooling is in effect.

watch the temps

1.9 is safe.

After POSt, go to bios and watch the temperatures there. If it goes above 60 degrees C, you better get another HS and fan.

Rigor where have you seen a socket at 2.05 ? I have slots running at 2.05.
Pillage I have my Tbird at 1.95 with stock reatial cooling, been that way for a couple weeks now.It does get pretty warm running RC5 and UT, 55 celsius.I have overclocked many athlons and have yet to fry one

I sounds like you have multiplier locked.
Unlock it before you change multiplier.
And do not raise the voltage.First you gotta try at default, and up it when system is not stable enough.

See the Duron @ 2.11 volts at tomshardware.com asus a7v voltage modification article. Shows where a duron 600 only ran 750 @ 1.85 volts but succeedly higher (1000? if i remember) at 2.11 volts!

It's me again

I've rechecked everything and I'm actually doing 850Mhz at 1.80V. I think by bumping it up till 1.90 will definitely do 900Mhz but I cannot find any documentaion on 1.90V for the DIP switches. What fan is strongly recommended? I'm running at 850Mhz in the range of 57-54 Celcius. I certainly do not want to go above 70Celcius. 😉

Re the GlobalWin FOP32, it is not an easy HSF to mount. The tension on the retaining clip is one problem, the other is that the heatsink is pretty massive. Here is how I did it and hopefully will make it simpler for others.

First, take some of the tension off of the retaining clip/strap. Easy to pop the fan off, then pull the retaining clip out. Take a two pliers and gently take some of the bend out, thus reducing the tension. Then reattach the fan (or you could leave off until you have mounted the HS, very simple to reattach).

Second, with my mobo already mounted(Abit KT7 Raid), I found it easier to remove the power supply to get it out of the way. You can really use the room. It is only 4 screws. I didn't have to disconnect any power connectors from drives, etc. Just pulled it up and layed it on top of the upper drive cage. You now have excellent access to the socket.

Third, scrape off the junky thermal tape which comes on the HSF and put some fresh thermal compound on the CPU.

Fourth, hook the back side of the retaining clip onto the socket latch (the one away from the power supply) then you are ready for the front side (the one with the little pivot).

Fifth, take two small blade screwdrivers (or something similar). Depress the end of the retaining clip with one screwdriver while guiding the pivoting hook with the other screwdriver down and over the latch.

Sixth, replace the power supply.

It takes longer to talk about it than do it. Your reward after this is all completed is a relatively inexpensive heavy duty cooling solution that will allow you to abuse your Tbird/Duron without fear.
