Overclocking Guide - need your input on this FAQ of sorts

Ok guys, I know that you all are sick of seeing the same questions over and over again with regards to overclcoking, so my idea is to start a big FAQ/Guide/Do's and Don'ts sort of thing here in the forum and just bump it occaisionally that way we *hopefully* won't have to answer these questions over and over. My experience with overclocking has been limited to celeron 1's and socket a tbirds, so i can only do some of this guide. i need everyone's help if this guide is going to be comprehensive enough to be called a guide and save us a lot of trouble. Here's what I have so far and i'm welcome to suggestions for additions, subtractions, corrections, etc.

AMD Athlon Overclocking Guide:

*Before you post anything, have you updated your drivers? This means the latest 4in1 drivers, the latest AGP drivers, the latest BIOS for your motherboard. If you're having problems, the solution may be as simple as updating these drivers, so do this first.

*Have you been to AMD's Support Page? THis has all sorts of information on approved heatsink/fan combonations, power supplies, airflow, and other various elements of building and running an Athlon system. Check that out next.

*If you want to unlock your processor, you can do it a couple of ways, but I don't recommend the pencil method. It's not permanent and graphite is not meant to conduct, so it isn't that reliable either. I recommend using the tutorial that Vpahm97 put together for using the Loctite Rear Window Defogger Grid Repair Kit. If you're going to buy the Loctite Kit, make sure it's not the glue, but the Grid Repair Kit. Almost every question regarding the repair kit can be answered in that thread.

*Don't use your CPU without thermal paste/grease/compound/whatever. Just don't do it. Don't ask why not, just don't. Unless you want a new, cool, high-tech-looking keychain that is...

*Do you want to know how your overclocking results compare with others'? Do you want to know what you can expect from that new chip you just bought? Check out Overclockers.com and click on CPU Database to see others' results and the average for each processor.

*Temperatures: keep it below 55 degrees celsius and you'll be fine. I promise. Really.

*Fans: The current champ is the GlobalWin FOP38, and it's very loud. If you want great performance with a quieter setup, check out the Taisol CEK734. Of course on the AMD support page, they have the HS/Fan rundown with the speed of the CPU that each fan is rated for, but you already knew that since you just went there right?

*Benchmarking: Don't use 3DMark2000. It's unreliable and gives widely varying results on similar setups. Tech review sites like Anand's don't use it for a reason. A more stable benchmark would be Quake3, Unreal Tournament, SiSoft Sandra, or all three! Compare your results with a Tech website's results on a similar setup to see how you're doing.

People, I'm open to suggestions. I also want someone to do one for a P3 setup, duron setup, celery2 setup so it's totally complete.

Vpham97, since the threads do expire, can I include your tutorial in the final version of this guide - giving you credit for it of course?

c'mon guys this is a good idea because if it's up all the time, we won't have to keep answering the same questions all the time. are you interested in this or not? if no one expresses support of this, then i'll let it die and just stop responding to everyone's questions. if all the advice i've given out doesn't matter, then forget about it, but i'm not going to keep replying to the same questions again and again. i thought this board was supportive and wanted to help out the newbies. nexbies this is important for you too. if this happens, you'll have a one-stop source for all your overclocking needs. show some support.

You only allow 1 1/2 hours for someone to reply...maybe nobody has read the post yet?

One thing I would add is that AMD processors should be overclocked first with the multiplier and then with the FSB to get a little more out of it. Most people familiar with overclocking Intel processors try first to do the FSB and then wonder why they can't make it work..

p.s. I think the FAQ is a good idea, but I've never owned, even less overclocked, anything faster than my K6-3+ so there's probably not a lot I could contribute..

I think it is a good idea. I have ideas for the format rather than the content. You could have a CURRENT list of the best overclocking chips that you can buy at retail. The list should be in the very first post so that people don't have to read the entire thread every time. So, someone would have to edit the post occasionally.

I came to this forum for the SOLE PURPOSE OF FINDING OUT WHICH PROCESSOR TO BUY for Intel overclocking goodness. I think many others come here for the same reason- at least, originally.

Your original post would change to something that looks like this:

Best Intel Overclockers:
Cel 566 CB0 80% success of 100FSB
Cel 600 CB0 80% success
Cel 633 CB0 80% success (Not Avail in CB0 stepping at retail any longer)
Cel 667 CB0 100% success (All 667 are CB0???)
PIII 550E

Best AMD Overclockers
I don't know anything about AMD yet.

Best Overclocker Slotket
MSI6905

Best Overclocker's m/b
815
Asus CUSL2
440BX
Abit

Any other suggestions? Does anyone know enough to fill out something that looks like this and post it with data that is actually CORRECT and hopefully complete?

ok, so i might have jumped the gun, but it usually only takes around half an hour for a thread to get picked up, so i was disappointed.

i think the oclock success rate is a cool addition and i think the front of the guide is a good place for it. this isn't the actual guide though. i plan on taking all the information and suggestions and putting it all into one big post later and just keep that bumped near the top so that anyone who wants the information can find it easily.

i want some information from the newbies. do you guys like this idea?

sounds good to me! i think that the key way to find out whats hot in cpu's and overclocking is by checking out all the review site on any kind of regular basis.... when something gets "hot" the word gets around fast... of course YOU know that already and you are trying to make info more available to the newbie or someone who is just getting back into the scene... good luck getting something done!

Suggestion, instead of rewriting every tip/detail from scratch, why not start with very comprehensive list of links with brief description of content. ..example...our contribution...
http://members.nbci.com/candjac/index.htm
Duron/Tbird oc article with detailed pics and oc'g circuit diagrams for maximum "understanding", and practical tips.

i thought about that, but the thing is that most sites refresh their content and archive the old stuff so the links wouldn't work all the time. i have some web space and am more than willing to put it up, but we need the info first. i whipped up that information on overclocking the tbird in about 15 minutes! it's not that hard. i just wrote down the answers to all the questions i've been answering over and over again this last week or two. i don't know that much about the piii's and the durons and the celery2's, so i need more help.

i do appreciate all those who are giving suggestions and stuff. it's a little discouraging though i have to admit. in the distributed computing forum, there's a great team spirit and members are always willing to put some effort into making the forum, the experince for other, the whatever - better. i guess i thought people were going to jump all over this, but i guess not.

Great idea. :)

You already covered the Thunderbird FAQ, so I can't really contribute..
