Are there any other factors to worry about, other than heat, when overclocking the core and memory? What is a "safe" temp for 6800's?

If I OC it and the temps are still average but the card crashes or there are artifacts and stuff, is there still possibility of damaging the card? Or is it safe since it's not overheating?
