Hey,

I just went from my gigabyte 680sli board to an intel chipset, i chose the blackops because of some recommendation and it had quite good reviews on overclocking (i guess mainly for quad cores)

However it has sooo many more BIOS options then my old board and its hard getting my head around it all, i was wondering whether anyone here has the same setup

Foxconn blackops x48
E8400
Antec 650 watt P/S
Asus 8800gt
Corsair DDR3 1600DX9

I guess thats all the info you need, i have played around with the bios settings for hours trying to overclock (9x450) which isnt quite stable, i can achieve (440x9) with the BIOS option 'instant overclock 30%' which seems to work better them if i actually pump up all the volts myself.

I have been trying the following settings between all the volt ranges i have listed below
at (450x9) but not getting it quite stable

CPU vcore - 1.4-1.5
NB volts - anything up to 1.7
SB - up to 1.5
DDR3 - anything from 1.8 to 2.1 volts

If you have any info to help in terms of settings and so fourh that would help heaps!
Also i know this chip can hit 4.8ghz as it was on my mates xfx 790i motherboard

Oh boy...

- I would not have chosen that particular board for everyday use. It's a benching board (it's basically purposely designed for breaking benchmark world records, and the BIOS has a pretty steep learning curve). There are boards less than half the price that will overclock a E8400 decently, and are less tricky to work with and get stable.

- That vCore is way too high and probably isn't good for the lifespan of that chip. You should not need 1.4-1.5v to hit 450MHz x 9.

Did you actually see your friend running it at 4.8GHz and did he prove that it was stable? Or did he just claim that he got 4.8GHz out of it? That would be a highly unusual overclock.

O i see... Well I did get the board for free, so in that case im not complaining, I swapped it for the Gigabyte EP45 extreme.. which now i wish i had of kept lol (i didnt actually get to use the board and even see its ability)

Alright well currently the Vcore is sitting around 1.3 volts

And to answer your questions, well no i did not see him running this chip at 4.8.... So im probably safe to believe that he was in fact lying lol

In your opinion, would u swap it for another board? (I've only just got it)

If it was free, then no, I probably wouldn't swap it ;).

If you had bought it at the retail price ($300 or whatever), I probably would have suggested returning it and getting something cheaper and less tricky/difficult. There are some good threads over at XtremeSystems as far as overclocking and tweaking the BlackOps. Like I alluded to before, that board has a somewhat steep learning curve.

I guess i'll keep trying and hopefully i persevere and get some good results
