i understand how to overclock things. i was just wondering what other people may have gotten with setup like this or exactly like this. also, i would like to manually control the speed of my cpu and chassis fan. is that possible on this mobo? from windows?

that is almost my old system. same vid card, same board, same cpu (actually recently got the cpu from ebay)

The stepping on the cpu i have is, LCB9E 0704XPMW, and noted on ExtremeOverclocking to beyond 3Ghz. I only have 1Gb of 533 DDR 4500 I also had an FX60 that topped out at the same speed as my Opteron so I am guessing my mobo is the problem. I've reached 2.86 stable with minimal voltage increase. I had to get to about 1.45v to get the FX60 stable at 3Ghz, but I was looking for a higher fsb, so that's what i mean by mobo limited/problem. If I can get ahold of a new A8N32 board, i'll definately give it a whirl again, as it was able to run Crysis, COD4, UT3, at some pretty good frame rates @ 1280x1024 medium quality... i think my biggest bottleneck was the vid card, but with the same card (1900) on my 8400 system a little improvement was noticed.

If I don't get into trying this again, I'll be selling my opteron :(

I know the board has Q-fan control and you can make the adjustments through bios but the only way i know how with the cpu fan is by a fan speed controller.

i have a 9800gtx now though...prolly should update that. yeah i got it to 2.6 without voltage increase. i am going to reinstall windows and then try it. i am assuming you are running windows vista right? im still die hard xp man.

btw, when i bought my chip i remember getting one of the best steppings. i don't know what it is though but i remember being very happy

for some reason, once the fsb gets beyond 240, the system really seems to fly, XP all the way man, but i am interested in seeing how a 64 bit os does

check that link i made, it has all the 939 steppings with a description about how well they overclock from users inputs

yeah but i don't want to pull the computer apart to find out my stepping. you think you could post what you have changed in the bios? like fsb, multiplier, voltage etc...

its not together right now but, ill try my best to remember...

cpu voltage was at 1.35

11x260 fsb - gave me 510 memory effective

i remember advancing channel a clock skew to 300advance (only used 1 channel) if its unstable, set it to normal

north bridge voltages were at 1.2 (all)
south bridge voltage was enabled

what kind of coooling did you have? i currently have a scythe ninja strapped to the cpu and some huge case fans in lian li case.

temps would get hot... i had some high 5000rpm fan with a controller dictating the fan speed... but sometimes beyond 130F but those temp readers are still a mystery to me; some work, some read the wrong thing, this program sucks, that program sucks, ... what ever, all i know is raising the voltage and cpu frequency will increase the temps respectively in regards to ambient temps, the ladder being the most important. I have some type of temp reader instead of a thermostat, but both will do fine. if you air cool, don't forget you can never be below ambient temps, sorry if you already knew that... but to answer the question, the HS was a stock HS with a Thermal Take 3 fin 5000rpm fan...

right now i am running perfectly fine at 12x235 for clock speed at 2.6ghz using most of the settings you gave me. i tried the 1.35 11x260 and gave me blue screen booting into windows. also, on startup it states my ddram clock is set to 266mhz...is that right?

one more thing, i thought max mult i could use was 11x and cpu-z shows its at 11x with clock speed of 2.5 but bios and windows shows it at 2.59

update: i have it running at 2.65 right now using 11x240 and i up'd the core voltage 1 step. ran stress test seems to be fine...gonna try at 2.8 again.

update2: to get it to run stable at 2.7 i had to up the voltage to 1.4 in the bios...is that high? cpuz seems to show it fluctuating between 1.4 and 1.44

best so far: 3dmark05@2.65ghz: 14015

If you are using 4 sticks of ram it will limit your overall OC. I think Asus may default your mem clk to 133 (266MHz) with four sticks (MSI does the same thing to me - except it's 166 -> 333MHz)

Whatever 'percent' you OC the cpu clock you are OCing the mem clock. 'Theoretically' your OCZ ram would allow you up to a fifty percent fsb overclock with your ram speed set at 166 MHz (166 x 1.5 = 249MHz 'double-pumped' = DDR 498).

BUT remember Asus has downclocked your four sticks SO set the memory clock to 100MHz because 100 x 1.33 = 133 (266MHz)

This would allow you up to a 33% OC on the CPU clock - 200MHz to 266MHz - so 266 x 11 = 2.926GHz.

The only way I think you can increase your memory speed from the 'Asus default' is to remove 2 sticks (maybe one - I don't know ...). I don't think you can completely blame Asus - I think it's an issue with all NF4 chipsets and 4 sticks of ram.

If you pull a stick or two I do believe that Asus will allow your OCZ to run at DDR 500 because the BIOS has a mem clock setting for '250'. SO ...

'New' theoretical goal: 36% OC (11x272) or 2.992GHz!

set BIOS mem clock to 183 ( 183 x 1.36 = 249MHz 'double-pumped' = DDR 498).

Using your 30% OC (11x260MHz) 2.86GHz- - - 183 x 1.3 = 238MHz 'double-pumped' = DDR 476

2.8GHz = 11x255 = 27.5% OC = 183 x 1.275 = 233MHz 'double-pumped' = DDR 467

1.4v ain't bad - watch your temps!

Don't let your HT go much beyond 1000MHz.

overvolt your NB, SB & HT

set your ddr vcore to 2.8v

loosen the timings (CL2.5-4-4-7 claimed by OCZ) if you have any more problems

wow thanks. i actually only have 2 sticks of ram in there now (2x1gig OCZ ram). i was going to order more but if what your saying is true i may stick with 2gigs

i couldn't achieve 2.8ghz
at 2.76 i got it to post...went to windows loading screen then monitor went black and computer just sat there.
2.71 booted fine, with mem fsb at 333mhz (11x245)(memory at 166x2)

I think you need to double your K8 to NB Frequency (the HT link should run up to 1000MHz).

Your ram is running 166 x 1.225 = 207.5 x 2 = 415MHz. Even though your ram might like it Asus may not be helping you out above 400MHz. I would drop the mem clock to 133 and try raising your cpu clock above 245 (have you tried that?)

edit: What is your vDIMM? How about your memory readings from CPUz?

in cpuz my dram frequency is 188.6mhz, at 2.5 volts, with max bandwidth of 250mhz

i also changed the HT link speed to 800mhz in bios

i dropped it down to 133 and then tried 11x250...it posted and booted into windows for the first time...gonna try it higher....oh wait...it blue screened with this:

"a clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval" STOP: 0x101

edit* 11x245 booted into windows (2.7ghz) gonna run some stress tests see how stable it is
* cpuz shows my ht link at 980mhz, bus speed 245, dram frequency at 158.5,
* btw i didn't change the timings on the memory yet... those timings coincide with CL, tRCD, tRP, and tRAS right?

CAS Latency (tCL)
RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD)
Row Precharge (tRP)
Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS)

Compare the readings in CPUz under the Memory tab to your stock timings. To relax the timings set the MCT Timing Mode to 'manual'. I don't think you really need to change tRAS ..

The stock timings look kinda loose to me for DDR400 - maybe OCZ had to loosen them to make it DDR500. My cheap-arse Kingston ValueRam DDR400 stock timings are 2.5-3-3-7 and I've got mine tightened to 2.5-2-2-6 with a 25% OC on my Opty 170. I think I'll try to drop my tCL to 2 :)
