Overclocking CPU while using integrated video

I performed a search on this topic and didn't see any answers.

I'm considering building a budget PC for my 4 year old son. We'll be using simple games and apps suitable for young children along with Internet surfing. I already have a powerful system for gaming so that's not an issue. Since I want to keep costs as low as possible I'm considering the Biostar TForce motherboard. I want to use the nvidia integrated video for now to keep costs low.

The ultimate question is this. Has anyone overclocked a CPU while using integrated video? Will it even work? Will it be stable? I'm wondering if CPU overclocking will make the motherboard unstable?

I'm toying with the idea of getting a Sempron 64 2800+ and overclocking it. If this isn't possible with integrated video then I'll go with plan B - buy a 3200+ Venice and put it in my system (overclock the heck out of it  ) and move my 3500+ Winchester to my son's budget system and run it at stock.

Thanks guys!

well, unless you're running some kind of distrubted computing project, you shouldn't need to OC.

Now if you want to do it for sh1ts and giggles, then, yeah, it should work okay. You might have to increase chipset voltage a bit for stabilty...

I had a Soltek SL-75MRN-L with G4MX IGP, Unlocked Barton 2500+ @2.43ghz DDR422 dual channel synch mode, plus the IGP core overclocked using coolbits. That system was rock solid and impressively fast for what it was. I was just playing with the IGP for a bit before dropping in my 5800U. I did use a vantec copper iceberg kit for cooling the NB&SB and maxed the chipset voltage too. Mangaed 6001 in 3DM01 with the IGP, no bad at all for what it was.

I believe it will be overclockable with proper cooling and tweaks. In fact, I'd be interested in your results :)

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm going to save a few bucks and stick with integrated video for a while then.

As long as the PCI bus is locked on the motherboard, and you don't run the memory at a speed where it's unstable, overclocking the CPU won't affect the integrated graphics.

EDIT: By the way, I have a system with integrated graphics, using a old mobile 1.6ghz northwood, and I have it overclocked to 2.4ghz. Got the motherboard for $30, and the CPU for $60.

i've been looking at this board too for a cheap budget system.

the integrated video is decent and there's no need for another video card.

keep us updated on this system.

your review may effect my choice in buying this board. :)

I used P4 with a Radeon 9100IGP from Soyo and it overclocked fine, but I had very limited options in the BIOS. I could only get it up to 215Mhz FSB, the highest allowed in the BIOS. It ran stable, though, and probably could have gone higher. I upgraded the MoBo and I have the chip running at 266Mhz FSB. If you're going to go with integrated graphics, I think the nvidia chipset will be fine, just get something from a known good OCing source (ABIT, ASUS, MSI), not a budget board like Soyo or Foxconn unless your sure it has the options you want. Actually, check the vendor site regardless of who it is and make sure you can tinker. The chipsets can do it, but some manufacturors are a bit stingy with the options available.
