Hey guys, I have a Radeon 4770 and I'd like to overclock it somehow with the stock fan included...

I just wanna know if its safe to overclock it (for those who have used it), or would I leave it to defaults?

do you think i should pump up the fan speed? coz I like to raise it to 800mhz GPU clock, the only thing is I can't raise the memory clock speed because every time I test it whenever I raise the clock speed, it hangs...

800 mhz only? Its safe to OC the gpu to the max thats allowed by ATI CCC. 830 mhz for core and 850 for memory. Fans are running at 42% set to manual and can't hear it over the case fans. You can even go farther using Rivatuner. How high you can go depends on your card individually but mine can go up to 875 mhz for core and 1000 mhz for memory and it is stable on FurMark. The fans are pretty loud over 50% speed so you may not want to go over the CCC limit unless you can stand the noise.

oh... I overclocked it to 830 mhz core and 850 on the memory... is it free to download rivatuner? and is it safe to overclock it to your level i mean 875mhz on the core and 1k on the memories with the stock fan?

Take it one step at a time (25MHz increments). Don't push it too hard too fast; test for stability every time you increase clock speed by playing a game for a couple of hours or running a free GPU stressing utility like OCCT. And Rivatuner is free.

well... I'm playing R6V2 right now and doesn't encounter any problems or lags... works fine with the current overclocking settings at 830mhz core and 850 on the memory...

I'd leave it right where it's at. Your not gonna get any game changing performance from another 25 Mhz.

does overclocking result to shorter lifespan of the graphics card? because Radeon 4770 does not have a PCS version or even VRM capacitors for OC mode

Yes it could shorten the lifetime but probably not by a drastic amount unless you overvolt the card.

ohh.. is that so, well all I just did was overclocked it at CCC, I don't know how to mess with the voltages.... =D

my only problem is now, since I started OC, every time I shut down, green skin appears... what does this mean?

i personally don't use ccc to oc my 4850. ati tray tool is better at this. 4770 is made to be oc. even my 4850 can do 700/1200 I bet your 4770 can do way more. invest in a dual slot after market cooler if you worry about temperature.

Does it still do it if you go back to stock settings? Have you tried testing out your overclock in games or some other stressful 3D application to make sure it's stable?
