Ok, I used the coolbits reg patch to o/c my V7700 to 200/400 from 200/333. Now, whenever I change resolutions, instead of just going
black while it changes, it displays a bunch of random colors and then changes. It also does this on startup. It doesn't take
any longer than usual to change. After it changes, the comp runs fine with no freezes/hangs. According to Asus SmartDoctor,
the temperature didn't change much. Is this a bad thing? CPU and FSB are not o/ced. I am using 1.4ghz T-bird, Abit KG7,
512 meg Micron pc2100 ddr at CL2. Any help appreciated.

My v7700 deluxe card does the exact same thing. The ram you have is probably the same as mine, made by samsung. I have heard that the other ram you can get on the v7700 card only overclocks to 370, and the samsung up to 400, which makes it a little better that you ahve the samsung ram. I only overclock mine up to 390, as after that i get dots appearing on my desktop now and again, and also when i change the resolution. I guess the card just can't take having the ram overclocked that high. Another thing is when i enable the mode in smartdoctor to watch over my card or something it does the same thing with dots and colours and it gets worse and worse until it freezes and the whole screen goes all colourful, somewhat like a television with no reception but with different colours. Another thing my card can do is clock up to 270 with no troubles :), but i'm guessing not all of that processor usage is being used as the bandwidth is the limiting factor.
aaaaanyway your solution is to jsut clock it down to about 395 or somethin or until the dots dissapear, just to be safe that it doesn't freeze or anything.
does anyone know a solution to my problem with smart doctor?

Am I just being cynical, but isn't any sign of odd behaviour a really bad thing to continue to use? I mean, isn't it likely to be severely shortening the card's lifespan?

Yes that is bad.

Weird colours, or video glitches of any kind, are signs that the card is being overclocked too far. And a sign that you are damaging your card. Are a few extra points in 3dmark worth destroying your card for?

Dial the memory down to 350, or so, and then increase it by 5 until you get weird colours appearing. When you do, dial it back to the last safe setting.

Overclocking the core doesn't accomplish much, I wouldn't bother much with that.

Yeah, I thought that was bad, so I reset it to default speeds before I asked. Thanks for the help.
