overclocking and sound distortion

I unlocked the multiplier on my thunderbird yesterday. After setting the multiplier up to 8.5, it booted to a stable 850mhz. The initial windows sound came up fine, but after that, all sound was distorted as hell. I reseated the card in another slot, and reinstalled the drivers, but still got same problem. Went back into BIOS, set my multiplier back to 8.0, and all the distortion went away. Anybody else had this problem??? I'm using a SB PCI128.

What do you mean by distortion? I'm in the process of building a new system (ABit KT7-Raid, TBird 800 oc'd to 950, PCI128, etc.) and the sound was fine until I tried to install a FAX modem.

The "Find new hardware" wizard found the COM port but now I have crackling in the sound from IRQ interference. The device manager shows no conflicts but I see that the current IRQ it is using is shared with an ACPI PCI holder, 2 USB host controllers and PCI steering (5 devices).

I doesn't make any difference where the card is placed -- I've tried to relocate the PCI128 in every other slot with all the other cards (except video) removed but I cannot get rid of the interference.

I also dl'd and installed the latest drivers but that had no effect on the problem. I guess I'll try your suggestion (slow CPU down) but I somehow think the problem is down deep in the bowls of the winders (sic) registry.

(Yeah, I know it's been awhile since you posted your msg but I thought I'd chance a reply anyway.)
