Old parts that I HAVE:

Athlon 64 3000+ Newcastle Socket 754 Revision DH7-CG (10x multiplyer) stock HSF
Chaintech VNF3-250 Nforce 3 250G motherboard
Thermaltake purepower 480W

parts I am BUYING:

Patriot XBLK 3200 1gb (rated up to DDR500)
Thermaltake Silentboost K8

Goal of 2.4GHZ (10 x 240MHZ) 1:1, is this achievable? (or I am crazy) I was originally gonna purchase a Venice 3200 from e-wiz with an epox board but I said, heck, why not improve on what I have lying around? :)

BTW, my board has a passive cooler on the nforce 3 chipset, is uprading to a HSF combo necessary for achieving my goal of 2.4GHZ?

THoughts?

My sempron 3100 paris and Pqi DDR 400 value ram can acheive 230 mhz 1:1 ratio easily. Heck I even tried go over 240 mhz. I'm sure it is possible with top notch ram laying around for your setup :)

The problem isn't with the RAM or motherboard, problem is with the old core. The CPU will probably be tapped out before the RAM or motherboard.

In my cig is the highest i could get with my newcastle But seeing how you have 10x you might be able to get 2.4. I wasn't Prime95 stable @ 2.4 with even 1.7Volts.

I'm right there too, at 2.2Ghz with a 2800+; Its like having an A64 3500+ for free with a minor voltage bump.

No need for socket 939 whatsoever.

As I said, the older cores are the problem. Your setup should hit higher bus speeds - Lord Banshee's Chaintech and especially angryswede's DFI. You can test that by lowering the CPU's multiplier, lowering HT multiplier and lowering memory speed, then cranking up bus speed.

The older CPUs should be good to 2.2GHz, above that won't be as easy unless you have the newer ones marked "AX."

Hmm last time I tested my AMD 64 2800+ can reach 2394Mhz with 1.55 volts and it is superpi stable (dunno about prime cos I only tested under an hour cos the temp is quite high: about 65C, because I live in equator my room temperature is about 30C, and my cooler isn't great for overclocking: zalman cnps7000b).
Currently I'm running at 2167Mhz (241x9) at 1.4 volts.

Maybe you can try it out 1st without buying those parts.

ecvs85, do you have the newer AX core? I have one, my A64 2800+ that will POST at 2.7GHz.

Yes it is the AX core, I don't think it'll do higher than 2.5Ghz though, since at 2.4 at 1.45-1.475volts it's not superpi stable.

How far of will these old CG's go?

My CG 3200 runs at 2.5GHz no problem. Any thing above that though... '

EDIT: typo.

I have almost exactly what you have except for the ram. I have the same PS, same board, and same proc and i can only reach 2250 stable. Good luck though

BTW, my board has a passive cooler on the nforce 3 chipset, is uprading to a HSF combo necessary for achieving my goal of 2.4GHZ?

THoughts?

I have the same processor right now and have gotten mine up to 2.4 on a DFI lanparty 250GB. I can get it to run stable at 2.4 and even 2.5 but when i ran prime on it, it failed within 5 min so i bumped it down to 2.2 and it passes with no problems. All i did was edit my FSB and my CPU/FSB ratio. I didnt mess with any memory or voltage settings.

My s754 A64 3200+ (newcastle I think) maxed at 11x237 (2607) @1.55v

It would POST with much higher FSB, but would BSOD when trying to load the windows desktop

I'll probably tune it down a little due to the voltage; I think it is too high. Any comments?

I have a Asrock K8combo-z mobo, AMD Retail cooling, and single-sided Samsung RAM (nothing special).

Glendor...
