Has anyone ever wondered why some people buy processors with $30-40 fans then overclock their processors to the same speed they could have bought a higher clock retail proc for?

LED that makes sense. I'd just like to say I have nothing against overclocking or overclockers, I do it myself. I just thought it was funny that sometimes we are so obsessed with OCing that we'd rather have an OC'ed 2200+ that a retail 2200+.
Back when the good ol' 1.6a was still available, that would frequently hit 2.4GHz. With the retail fan. Even buying a better heatsink to crank it up further wouldn't put the price anywhere near that of a 2.4GHz chip.
And as LED said, a decent heatsink is a good investment. Like a decent case - it can be reused.
I bought a Thermalright AX-7 (heavy SOB) for $25 to OC a $105 (in June 2002) Athlon 1800+ XP. I guess I'm an overkill kinda guy. I never did think of it this way. I wonder what that $25 extra bucks would have bought. I got that 1800 up to 1.7GHz without really trying too hard, which is 2100 territory.
So what is the mentality of taking hours of time and extra money to get a water cooling system or even a mini fridge to chill your CPU to just above freezing? Just because they can? Bragging rights? "I got my 1600+ to 2.2GHz with a modified GE Microfridge to chill the CPU to 2C." Good for you. If those are your priorities, that's fine with me. I just think there are some other things that may be more productive in a grander scale...
