Hi there,

I have a amd 1ghz,kt133 socket a mobo, 512meg ram, gf4 4400 with win 98se

I would like to overclock my cpu, but to be honest i dont know where to start. I have not really attempted anything beyond, graphics card install and hdd jumper settings. I have been reading through the forums for hints etc. But what i really is someone who could tell me what to do step by step. Perhaps there is a guide to it. They always seem to be really vague and for someone with dare i say it, limited skills, not enough tips are given.

Anyway if anyone can help or point me in the right directions i would be very grateful.

Thanks

Rossco

Just read some of the longggg threads in the motherboard forum. Each one goes into detail about how to do so and you can post and trouble you have there.

Tip- Just bump up your fsb in your bios untill windows is not stable anymore then up the voltage a little and continue.

The KT133 chipset was a very poor overclocker. Now the KT133A chipset was a great overclocker so be sure which one you have. With the original KT133 you will be lucky to hit 110 Mhz FSB stably. With the KT133A and unlocking/lowering your CPU multiplier you should be able to hit the high 150s with some quality RAM.

Good luck!

Both of the first two replies are excellent advice, but if I were you (just starting out on overclocking), I'd try this one quoted above ^^^. It's definately the right place to start, go into the BIOS (you know how to do that right - hit delete as it's booting) and in the CPU menu increase the FSB setting (by the smallest incriment, which could vary depending on your motherboard).

You will probably see something like this CPU:Memory:pCI and by default on the KT133 it's set to 100Mhz:133MHz:33MHz (PCI speed may be omitted, depending again on mobo) ... try increasing to , say around 105 MHz FSB (the CPU speed) to start. When you reboot the BIOS will tell you how fast you're running (in this case since you have a 1 GHz Athlon which runs at a 100 Mhz FSB speed, the built in multiplier is 10X. So a 105 MHz FSB will set your CPU to 1050 MHz and it will say this as you boot). Experiment around with different FSB speeds and see how high you can go, while the machine stays stable.

I'd explain more but I'm unsure of how high your understanding of overclocking is and wouldn't want to patronize you (plus I'm damn tired!).

Hopefully this helps a bit.

By the way, your CPU is seriously bottlenecking your Video Card; I'd recommend you get an upgrade to a nice overclock-friendly system so you can mess around with overclocking, specifically a P4 1.6A or 1.8A with a good DDR motherboard.

Thanks for the replies.

I have been looking in the bios. But i cant see anywhere the fsb speed or the multiplier. On startup it does stat it. it says the spped is 133X7.5. So i must be able to up it. Am i looking in the wrong place. i have read through each option in the bios and i just cant see it. Could this be hidden. Would a bios flash with an updated version help.

I know a bit about a bit. I just have never attempted an overclock before. So i am not up on voltage modding, bios flashing etc.

So what would be my next move?

thanks guys

I am not sure where to start to be honest. I got all the info i could find and perhaps someone could point me in the right direction.

Ok then i have a load of info, most of it probably useles, but here it is anyway!

Bios = according to pcmark2001 i have a Award Software International Inc Bios Version 6.00PG Release Date 27/03/01. But on the board itself there is a chip which says. Phoenix Bios D886 Q13304109 AK12A501

CPU = AMD Athlon @ 1000MHz external clock 133. 256 EEC Syn Writeback.

MOBO = AK12 V.30 S/N AK12 2A987YE11600050 AMD Socket-A. Model Number is (VT) 8363-686. (FSB 2X 133MHz (266 data rate)

GPU = Gainward GF4 4400 Golden Sample Card

RAM = 2 x 256 MEG Ram sticks. 1st sd256m pc-133, 2nd 256 16X 8 SDR 133-4L

PSU = Model (LPD2 - 300WW) S/N 2k04219201

H/Sink and Fan Evercool Thraml Total solution Heat Terminator. No model number on it.

Chipset = VT 8363

Well There it is. I am sure i havent got half of what i need.

I also checked my bios for the FSB and Multiplier info and i just cant see it. I am not sure its there to be honest. The only thing remotely like it it in Frequency/voltage control. There is an option to change the CPU host/PCI/ Spread Spec. Its on default and the options are 133/33MHz/ - 0.5%
""/off or "" / +0.5%. I didnt change it as i had no idea what it does

What do you think my next move is then?

Thanks again.
