Overclocking an Core Duo E4300 (E4200 or E4400)

I am getting ready to build a Core Duo E4300 setup. I have heard MANY recommendations with very few specific reasons why.

My primary concern is BANG/$!!
To qualify, the rig has to achieve a stable overclock - 24/7.

I listed the primary recommendations I have heard below. If you have knowledge of specific advantages of any particular board, please list them. If you have experience, please mention specific settings. I would also like to hear recommendations for memory to match ...

1.) Asus P5B-E
2.) BIOSTAR TForce P965PT
3.) Gigabyte 965P-DS3
4.) Gigabyte 965P-S3
5.) Asus P5B-Deluxe
6.) Asus P5N-E SLI

If I have missed a good board, PLEASE mention it and give specific advantages!!!

Thank you!

Well, best bang for buck is going to be the DS3 most likely since its cheaper than the P5B-D/E which are higher overclockers but cost more. So you have to ask yourself do you want to spend the extra money to have a little higher OC potential? Only you can answer this for yourself. Anyway the choice is mainly going to be between the DS3 and the P5B-D or E model. Either choice is is good. Just depends on your budget and how high you want to try to push on a overclock.

Personally if I had to make this choice I'd go for the P5B-E because its supposed to be more stable overall of the three and has the features I like/want. To me its worth paying that little extra. But thats just me.

Also, did you see AT's newly posted 965 Mobo Roundup they posted today? I'd reccomend reading through it to help you decide whats best for you.

Thanks for your info!

Considering the write-up on 965 boards, I am down to 3 boards now

1.) Asus P5B-E
2.) BIOSTAR TForce P965PT
3.) Gigabyte 965P-DS3

Any suggestions for memory?

I went with the biostar sure it had less features but from what I gather it does not use the horrible jmicron IDE controller. I am not ready to swap out all my IDE stuff yet and did not want the head ace of dealing with the jmicron controller. If I had all SATA stuff I would of went with the ds3 for sure. I just need to find a good reasonably priced HSF to go with my 4300 which should get here in a few days.

The Biostar P965PT has top notch overclocking, and its the only board that DOESN'T have ANY IDE problems. However, the user reviews are reporting LAN port problems. The Asus is a top notch board, but is the most expensive. In the end, The DS3 is probably what it comes down, now that is only $125 at the egg, and many users have the board, and it clocks very well. All three boards clock well enough for the E4XXX series processors. BANG/$ goes to the Biostar since it is the cheapest board able to hit 500mhz fsb stable.
Ram wise, you want DDR2-800. 2gb that boots at 1.8v, although most boards should boot most ram at this point.

1.) Asus P5B-E / P5B-E PLUS / P5B
3.) Gigabyte 965P-DS3

Hey all, good question OP... I'm in a similar situation and I cant decide which board to go with... is there actually much difference between the P5B and the P5B-E.. or even the P5B-E and the P5B-E PLUS? I couldnt figure out which of those boards were reviewed in the AT roundup, it mentioned 1.02g and stuff but I don't know what that refers to, where they all Deluxe? Basically which is best value, what's the diff and what to avoid?

and basically overall which boards better? I have to admit the black pcb on the p5B-E and E PLUS are a lot nicer looking than the DS3, but really performance is what matters... unfortunately :S

I just noticed this review HardOCP Review of P5B-E

To summarize: they had some severe issues with drives that were connected to the board.

Was their experience an isolated one?? Please comment if you have overclocked a P5B-E (Positive or negative).

For the moment, I am leaning towards the Biostar P965PT or the Gigabyte DS3.

I am still hoping to get SPECIFIC recommendations for RAM. Per above recommendations, I will be going with DDR2-800 Ram. 2 concerns - budget and reliability.

You guys have been great - please keep the information flowing!!!!

Great question - it is not very clear what the substantive differences are!!

Do any of the P5B motherboards differ in their overclocking abilities???

Thank you in advance!
