Overclocking an Athlong XP 333mHz to 400. Good idea or bad?

I am currently running an Athlon XP 2500 Barton at 333mHz FSB. I have never overclocked anything before. I dont have my chip unlocked or whatever you have to do when you connect the dots on the casing. I have a Soyo KT-600 Dragon Plus mobo, and it supports 400 mHz FSB. I also have pc3200 ram that I am running at 2700 because I think that having the RAM and the CPU at the same bus speeds improves performance and stability.

The current CPU core temp is at 39 degrees C. Is it a good idea to try upping the CPU FSB to 400 and the RAM FSB to 400, or will I be getting to close to overheating the CPU? What is a good temperature for an overclocked CPU?

Any comments would be nice.

Go for it ggupta. I have a 2500+ that has never run at 333MHz FSB. Since day one it's been at 400MHz FSB (or higher). I believe that even the stock cooler is enough to cool a 2500+ @ 3200+ speed.

Do it and come back and tell us about sweet your computer is.

it doesnt require much at all to oc it from 333 to 400MHz. its really simple. i've done it on stock cooler along with pc2100 and got it perfectly stable from day one. the mobo was an old kt600 also.

My 2500+ was running 52/59 at 175 fsb with stock fan and about 48/55 at 166fsb (would crash with anything higher than 175fsb). I then got a TT Volcano 12+ and some artic silver 5 and increased my case fan count from 2 to 4 and now running at 200x2 fsb with cpu fan on half speed and load temps are about 55C. Guess I got the stock HSF made out of AMDs bottom of the barrel. Ran my pc2100 at 200x2 for a while until I got some new 3200, had no problems handling the heat.

Anyhow to answer your question, yes FSB raising is more important than raising the multiplier as this not only speeds up your cpu, but many other parts as well. I say go for it, raise it as high as you can!

As long as you have ze 6:2:1 AGP/PCI divider or AGP/PCI lock feature on your motherboard, you should be fine bumping the FSB to 400 with your PC3200 RAM. I would bump my FSB to 400 if I only had an AGP lock or 6:2:1 divider, f'n KT400 chipset!!

Overclock. That is the answer. 1.75v should do it. 11x200mhz. Make sure your RAM timings are relaxed to start, and it wouldn't hurt to bump up the RAM voltage and the chipset voltage a bit if you can.
