Hi. My friend upgraded his computer and he gave me his Athlon XP 2600+ Thoroughbred with FSB 333mhz and a stick of some unknown brand of 512mb DDR333 RAM.

I know it's a rather old processor compared to today's standards but does anyone remember how I would go about overclocking it? Are there any sites that would pertain to ocing this processor? And is there any locking or unlocking I have to worry about?

Also, my friend recommended I get the Abit NF7-S or the ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard. Which would be better for overclocking?

I'd like to thank you in advance for any help anyone can give me.

Mobo for O/C : NF7-S (or DFI Infinity for high FSB).
If the stepping of your CPU is good you should be able to get 200mhz easily, but your RAM will likely limit you, especially if this is a "noname".
If your CPU is old enough (in order to check the release date you need to remove it and read the serial number), i.e. about one year old, it should be unlocked.
For O/C, get rid of the DDR333 RAM and get a good DDR400.
Then you'll be ready for a good O/C (if you have a good heatsink such as a thermalright or Zalman CNPS7000Al-Cu. The later is not compatible with NF7-S).
