Overclocking an AMD 4800+ and drivers for a M2V-MX-SE

Hey so I have a 5 year old(ish) build which consists of a

M2V-MX-SE ASUSTek Mobo

AMD Anthlon 64 4800+ Dual Core running at 2.5ghz with a max and min FSB multiplier of 12.5x

-4 gigs of ddr2 ( can't remember which brand and I am typing from work )
-Geforce GT220 running at 1440x900
-Antec 550 psu.

Before I start with my questions I'll give you a little back story.

My cpu started to give me random shutdowns, mostly during gaming ( League of Legends, Call of Duty 4, Counter Strike Source, Starcraft II and other Non-Intensive games ) Then right after I would just boot up the pc again and it would be ok for a few hours and happen again. So I thought it was the powersupply (which was an old 430 or a 500watt psu I think) so I upgraded to my now antec 550. Was ok for about 24 hours then started happening again. So my friend told me to download OCCT to stress test my machine.

Ran the test for 5 mins and it shut down my pc, booted it up and looked at the graph results and my cpu was hitting 100+ degrees!! Thinking I was out a cpu I Looked down at my cpu heatsink and it was clogged with dust, naturally feeling like an idiot I got out the shop vac to start cleaning it ( didn't have a can of compressed air and it was Christmas, nothing was open to buy some ) So I cleaned out all the dust but while cleaning I accidently snapped off 2 of the cpu fins. SO with some minor adjusting to another cpu fan I jimmy rigged it on. My case doesn't have any sides on it so instead of finding a compatible cpu fan that hooked up to the cpu fan power port on the mobo i used the chassy power port. ( now giving me a cpu fan error on bootup which is ok)

Ran the test again for 35 minutes at 100% load and maxed at 65degrees on cpu1 and 59 on cpu2.

So assuming I got the shut down issue solved I want to try to overclock to get a bit of better performance from my processor. I am buying an i5-2500k with either a 6970, 570 or a 7970 in a few months. I know that the i5 is a good cpu to overclock and I have no experience so I want to start now and try to learn for when I do get it ( plus I could use the extra performance in SC2 ).

I'm not sure how or what to do but my goal would be in the 3ghz range( not to much to ask I wouldn't say, not sure on how much is a safe overclock and whats not )

My second issue is there isn't any drivers for the M2V-MX-SE ASUSTek motherboard for win7 ultimate. I searched and searched and could'nt find anything. There are for vista but when I try those, comes up with an error saying the path doesn't exist ( meaning I'm not using Vista??? ) The only drivers I found are for my gpu and my sound drivers.

Everything works, like my sound and interner works, nothing is saying its missing in the Device Manager but I am confused, is there something I am missing. Only problem I noticed since wiping xp and installing win7 is when I scroll it kinda lags, it will scroll for a second stop and then continue scrolling.

Anyhelp is apreciated. Sorry for the story book, I felt like I didn't want to miss anything I felt important.

Good story to read. :D I like to see people learn from their mistakes.

My opinion on motherboard drivers is that you don't need them. Unless there is an issue with stability, I wouldn't bother installing motherboard drivers.

For 4 computers that I own, when I reinstall Windows 7, I have never installed motherboard drivers, because, in my experience, the stability is not compromised.

I hope others can help you on your overclocking adventures! :D

Yeah I found it weird but hopefully nothing changes. True test will be when I start gaming again.
