Overclocking an AMD 3000 (64, socket 754) questions

I recently bought an AMD64-3000, socket 754.
Motherboard is an Asus K8N-E Deluxe
RAM is Kingston Value (2 sticks of 512MB).
Retail HS/Fan
Temps seem to hover around 45C.

I realize the motherboard and RAM are not ideal for overclocking, but would it be worthwhile to try? I am not really heavily into overclocking (otherwise I would have bought different components), but if I can get some performance bump with little risk I would like to try. What sort of performace gain do you think I could attain with the above? Maybe 2.2gHz? Is more than that require the high-end RAM and such?

Thanks for any insight. I would just go for it, but if success rate would be under 25% I rather not risk something going horribly wrong.

You do not need high end ram for overclocking. All you do is set up a ram divider. I am running the same processor at 2.4 ghz with some CVS PC3200 memory. And if you OC properly there is almost zero risk involved. Just take it slowly and watch the temperature. I have found the performance gain going from stock to 2.25ghz to be about 5fps going from 2.25 to 2.4 gives me around an extra fps or two.

Yeah man go for it. 🙂

Like Computer Man said above...you don't need great ram to OC A64's. That's part of the beauty of the platform. I'm running a 2800+ right now at 9 x 270 = 2430 mhz with the stock cooler and it's rock solid. With the higher multiplier of the 3000+ you should be in very good shape. 2.3-2.4 ghz shouldn't be much of a problem if it's a Newcastle...2.2 or so for a Claw.
