Overclocking an A64 with PC3500

I have an A64 3000+, 1 GB of Mushkin Level One PC3500 (433MHz), and an Asus K8V Deluxe. What exactly would I do to make use of the extra 33MHz the RAM is offering?

go into bios and set the cpu speed to 216 and you'll use 32 megherz of that extra speed or you could set it even higher and oc the ram too. I'm running my ddr400 as ddr420

Will the stock AMD heatsink/fan be enough to safely cool the processor during heavy gaming if I set the CPU speed to 216?

It seems that the Athlon64s run very cool. So I would guess that the stock heatsink and fan should be fine.

Yes. Set the HTT to 216 on the jumperfree menu. Almost guaranteed to work on stock cooling.

By "HTT" do you mean the "CPU FSB Frequency"? Also, could I go to something less, like 208, if I'm not brave enough to go to 216 yet?

There is no FSB on the Athlon64. In the bios on the K8V go to the jumperfree menu, and choose the HTT speed, and set it to 208 or 216 and save.

But I don't have any "HTT" field in the jumperfree menu. The only field I have in my BIOS under jumperfree that will allow me to select these kind of numbers is called "CPU FSB Frequency".

Yeah, thats what it would be.

HTT, well I would assume the first part is Hyper Transport, but what the last T stands for I don't know.

But just change what you have as the CPU FSB Frequency to overclock it.

I will have to check my bios number tonight when I get home, but my menu is different than yours.

Unless you do fairly high voltage increases to the cpu. It shouldn't make to much of a difference or any difference in the life of the cpu.

We didn't even tell him to increase voltage (I won't) So no effect at all long term in that case.

Ok, great. Yep, I'm running stable right now at 216MHz. After playing CoD or MS Flight Sim after a while the temps get up to like 52-54 celsius as reported by MBM5. Are those temps safe?

You are safe to 65c, but Athlon64's run cooler normally. What is your HSF, and what is the ambient temp ?

OK, what is the system temp ? Maybe your case needs help ? If not get a Thermaltake Silent Boost K8 for $30 or better.

I don't know, MBM won't give me the case temp, but my motherboard idles at 40. Thx for the Thermaltake suggestion.
