Overclocking an A64 3000+ Winchester core

Hello, I just upgraded from a XP2200+ to a Winchester core Socket 939 3000+ A64. Now I know the Socket 754(?) version runs at 2Ghz, while the 939 runs at 1.8Ghz. Is there some difference between the cores that would require the Winchester core to run 200Mhz slower? Am I right in thinking that I should be able to bumb the speed to 2Ghz without heat issues? Will this be easy to do? I'm not looking for an agressive overclock, but if I can get an extra 200Mhz out of it without problem I figure why the hell not?

Thank you for any replies.

It won't be a problem. The Winchesters run on a lower clockspeed because of revised, more efficient architecture. A 2 GHz Newcastle is supposed to run as fast as a 1.8 GHz Winchester.

Hi, there is no problem, in fact, 3000+ winchesters can go easily to 2.4 Ghz and some even higher, 2.6, 2.7 Ghzs stable!!
If you do not know how to achieve those speeds please ask us!
Remember: Winnies don't like Cpu Voltage very much, with a low vcore increment you should be able to reach 2.2Ghz stable!
If your cpu temps don't go any higher at full load than 50ºC you can relax.
Mine gets 40ºc at maximum load, 30ºc idle.
Socket 754 is "worse" than Socket 939.

the skt 939 is better than the 754, its just like the San Diego cores run slower than the Venice. it doesnt really have an effect. 200mhz is nothing. nothing at all. you hopefully can do 400mhz without much of a voltage increase. info on overclocking is here

Thanks all. The MB and CPU are showing up the day after next so I'll try to post some info this weekend on how it went.

perhaps i got a "bad" parts or just bad luck, but i cant get to 2.4 without 1.6v ... so i wouldnt be so optimistic. i would say 2.25 would be quite achievable with 1.55v, and you'll probably be able to do 2.4 at 1.55v but that would depend on your luck.

depends on the ship you get, the mobo you put it on, and your willingness to tweak till you're happy with the results. see sig for my results.

well, i can hit 267 with 1.6v ... 265 crashes p95 after about 3-4h at 1.55v ... i'm 264 p95 stable at 1.55v ... i dont know how u guys get such great results with <1.5v ..

i keep getting a rounding error ...

I think the question is are they really stable for the long haul. I can't do much without bringing the vcore up to 1.5+ and I think that is the norm.

Boy this MB has a lot of overclocking options build into the MB. Looks like I can just up to 2Ghz with the memory at standad DDR400 speed by changing one option. I need to get it up and running though before I start tweaking to much though. I need to make sure it runs fine at stock speed before I screw with it.
