I use an Asus m5a97 r2.0 motherboard with a corsair cx 600w PSU and I seem to be having some heat issues with getting the fx 6300 to 4.2 ghz.

I am using the hyper evo 212 with Artic silver ceramique 2 thermal paste.

My case is the rosewill challenger.

Idle heat for CPU is 40 degrees C and Prime 95 tests after 10 minutes would reach 60 degrees C.

Multiplier?
voltage?
HT link speed?

Oh, and I don't consider 60 °C to be high on stress test.

I have a FX6300 on a Biostar TA970XE that reaches 4.0 Ghz with only a multiplier change, while another FX6300 on a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P (a better board) that took more effort to reach those 4.0 GHz. In some cases, it is just draw of the luck. Both PCs are using Zalman Optima tower cooler.

I think you are fine.

60 is quite cool still. You could easily get into the low 70s before you need to start worrying, and even then you'd still have some headroom.

I have an FX-6300 on a Biostar TA970 with a Thermalright True Spirit 140. Its at 4.2 Ghz with the voltage at 1.3625. When I run Prime95 the CPU doesn't pass 40C. The NB is another story - it hits 78C. Always seems to be a weak link somewhere on cheap motherboards!
