overclocking a voodoo 3 3000

Hey, I've gotta deal with this old system that I have until I can afford a new computer, but here are the specs: 333 MHz AMD K6-2, 192 MB PC-100 and a PCI Voodoo 3 3000. Now I know its old, but I gotta deal with it. I was told I can't rack up the clock speed to my CPU without soldering and messing with it(its an integraded processor). So, since I can't do that, my only real other option is to overclock the voodoo. I have an overclocking utility off of the 3dfx driver page and it lets me adjust all sorts of things. At this point all I'm worried about is clock speed. Now its scaleable to 210 MHz and its stock at 166. I have it running at 175 without any extra cooling. What all do I need to get it going faster? Just another fan? I really don't know a lot about this stuff, so I'd appreciate it if anybody wants to help me. Also, if you can recommend I do anything else to get this system faster let me know. I really only play HL on this thing, but I'd like to have it running as fast as possible. Again, I'm stuck with this for awhile longer, I don't have the money for a new one yet.

when i had my voodoo 3000 overclocked i used to have 2 of these blowing right on it. never had any problems at all. they move a ton of air.

I think above anything else, the K6-2 is what's holding you back.

When I had my K6-2/450 system, and I upgraded to a Duron/600, I saw a humongous increase in speed, using the V3 3000 I had at the time. I think it mostly had to do with the fact that the K6-2 was rather poor performing due to its lack of on-die L2 cache.

a 3000 can overclock pretty well as long as 1) u dont' have any other cards near it, 2)u dont' go higher than 183 (v3 3500 speed) with the default cooler.

i wouldn't even bother with it, personally. i used to have a celeron 400 with a voodoo3 2000 PCI, and i saw no improvement when i overclocked the Voodoo.

Same advice here, you wouldn't notice the difference. The CPU is definitely what's holding you back, since it has very bad FPU performance, especially if you don't use the 3DNow! drivers.

For the most part I'm only playing HL multiplayer/ or HL mods. I can run the game at 1024x768 on multiplayer and the mods and it runs fairly well. The differernce in performance between 640x480 and 1024x768 is almost nonapparent. So yeah I'm thinking you guys are all right in saying my CPU is the real culprit behind my ancient system.
