Overclocking a Stock Dell 2400---Wishful Thinking?

Hey guys,

I'm currently saving for a high end system but I'm stuck with my Dell Dimension 2400 for now. The music software I just got (Tascam Gigastudio 3) is recommending a 2.8 GHz processor for some of it's applications and I only have a 2.2.

Does anyone know if a stock Dell of this low caliber will even allow overclocking (I did poke around in the BIOS once but didn't really know what I was doing). If anyone knows or has tried it, it might save me some hassle if you can tell me if it's feasible.

Dell doesn't support Overclocking.

Doing so will probably void your warranty.

However, there are a number of software FSB modifiers that you can use from within windows.

My brother ran an older version of giga (with the "only" 1 GB piano) on a P3 1.3a (Tualatin Celeron) so the 2.8 GHz might be a bit overstated if you don't need extreme polyphony.

Dell usually means no overclock for you.

Dave, yea, I think Dell means many things, mostly, though, it means "you will be buying a better computer".

Oh well, I can always use this one for the internet and keep my work computer offline.

Re: GS3. It comes with a new 24 bit Gigapiano 2, which is accompanied by some sophisticated reverb and body resonance modeling. They suggest the 2.8 or better for that.

Ah, that explains why he upgraded his synth PC to a P4 3.2 GHz then :)

Yea, I'm going for the fastest chip I can afford. My understanding is that the PCI bus speed is FSB dependent, too. I will get a good fast MOBO. Everything that slows down the system can contribute to latency between MIDI trigger and sound output. Now the added sample bit depth and processing demands from modeling make it even more critical.

I seem to be stuck getting software that wants a lot of speed and memory. My Corel Painter 8 really drags when using high imbedded resolutions with my Dell. I wasn't planning to be a "computer geek/overclocker" etc. ;), but the software just eats as much as you can throw at it.
