Overclocking a P4 2.0AGHz (400mhz fsb) in a Shuttle SS51G?

It's been a couple of years since my last overclock and I want someone's opinion if I should/could overclock a new PC i'm building. Here are the specs:

Motherboard: Shuttle SS51G SiS 651/962L Chipset
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.0AGHz 400MHz FSB
Heatsink: Shuttle I.C.E Technology CPU heat-pipe (I have that artic paste stuff too)
Memory: 2 x Mushkin DDR 256mb PC-2700 Rated 2.5-3-3; 6ns
Video Card: Abit Siluro GeForce4 TI4200 64mb DDR TV/DVI
Power Supply: Shuttle Micro 200W

I was going to get the 1.6a CPU but newegg was sold out this morning and i'm very impatient =). I'm not going to be horribly dissapointed if I can't overclock this system much because the point was to get rid of a lower end athlon/video card.

Any advice much appreciated.

After reading overclockers.com it looks like I should be able to get this OC'd to at least 2.4/2.5 on the default voltage. I guess the only thing I need to find out now is if this particular Shuttle board supports FSB tweaking and if my new memory can handle it.

Still, any feedback would help (especially links).

depends on how good your p2 2.0a is, mine which i got just recently runs fine at default voltage and 533 (2.666mhz), and its on a ecs p4s5a 645dx

Ok, I kindof figured as much since so many users here have 1.6a's. I think I also remember reading that yields of overclockable 2.0a's weren't as high as the 1.6's.

Either way, I think at least the 2ghz will keep my satisfied for at least 6 months ;)

I should have waited just a few more hours to purchase this thing. I read earlier that prices are going to plummit in a few weeks. Oh well.

btw, can I ask what voltage your chip runs at now? Shuttle's new XPC board doesn't allow bumping of the voltage I hear.

Thanks.

I guess most importantly you should find out what the motherboard supports. I'm assuming not many features for being a sff case.

I just put together an SS51G using a 1.6A from newegg this past weekend. I musta just beat you ;)

It runs at 2.13 no problem, 2.20 it seemed OK, 2.24 corrupted my hard drive :( I don't think the yields are as good with the 2.0's, but what the hell, you'll be at 2GHz anyway.

Another thing to consider is that it seems the core voltage is a little lower than "stock" on the SS51G - mine shows up as only 1.42V vs. 1.5 spec.

The board supports fsb tweaking in 1 MHz steps, but no voltage tweaking at all. Your memory is fine. My weak link seems to be the Samsung hard drive I'm temporarily using. I got a new WD 1200JB today, we'll see if that helps.

Prices always plummet a few weeks after you buy anything!

2.2ghz on lower voltage even. Nice! I've read alot of posts about older drives struggling with FSB overclocks so your probably going to have even more success w/ the new WD drive.

I'd like to get at least 2.2ghz. I'm not interested in over-heating an already hot box. Which video card are you using? Are you overclocking that too?

*i can't wait till wednesday*

Funny thing is the temp stays the same regardless of the speed the CPU is running at. Usually about 50 C at idle and up to 58 fully loaded.

I'm using a Gainward Geforce3 Ti200/450 Golden Sample (from my old rig), lightly overclocked to 200/450 (vs 175/400 stock) with lots of headroom. The bad thing is that the fan on it is by far the loudest thing in the box. Without that fan it would be virtually silent. After I install the new hard drive and let it all run for a few days then I will try to squeeze every last bit out of it, both the CPU and the GF3.

I also have 2 x 256MB Crucial DDR2100 and a HP DVD200i DVD+RW burner installed. No floppy.

The onboard sound is better than I thought it would be, while not quite as good as a Santa Cruz or Audigy it wouldn't be worth buying one of those cards in my opinion (and I already have one of each of those).

I'm interested, where did you get your chip from?

Also, prices won't fall that much for the slower chips, such as 1.8 and 2.0 chips. It will probably drop from $20-30 at most, which is not really worth the time waiting for it. ;)

I have a P4 2.0A and have had *decent* success with overclocking, however I would have liked to get 133FSB... it won't even boot at that setting.

So far the best I have been able to get is 120FSB (2.4GHz) @ 1.75V and high 50's (56-58C) under full load. I won't go any higher on the vcore because I don't want to fry the chip. Here is my setup:

P4 2.0A GHz
Epox 4G4A+
2x256MB PC2100 DDR
2x60GB IBM 60GXP in RAID0
VisionTek Geforce3 Ti200

Do the CPU numbers reveal if a certain batch of P4's are more overclockable than others? If so, can anyone decipher that from these #'s:

2A GHZ/512/400/1.5v
SL5YR COSTA RICA
3211A243-0653
INTEL MC 01

Well I'm now considering getting the ss51 with a radeon 9700. I didn't know it overclocked in 1mhz intervals. Can anyone tell me the max supported chip speed on that motherboard? With the prices going down on Sept 1 (on the p4s not the case), its looking very attractive to me.

Just for fun I overclocked mine from a 2.0A to 2300mhz (115x20.0) Seems to run at 54 degrees idle in WinXP. I'm not daring enough to take it any further.

These machines are very fun. Has to be the best looking number cruncher I've ever owned.

edit: to answer your question they'll take the fastest 533 fsb P4 out there right now. 2.53ghz.

Hi,

anyone overclocked a P4 B in that shuttle rig? My 2.26 @1,63V won´t get over 137MHz FSB :(

My other specs:

-1x256MB Samsung PC400 (tried 1:1, 4:3 and 4:5 settings @CL3 and normal timings)
-IBM 307045 (did 165 MHz FSB in my old P3 System, so "high" PCI clock is not the problem
-PNY GF4 4200

-Temps are not the best, but not critical for FSB > 137 MHz :(

At least:

Your SS51G Owner:

My IDE Controller (first + second) runs only in PIO-Mode. I found no SIS driver for that system, anyone there who can help me?

Thanks.

Marek

I have a 2.0A gig....and wcpuid shows that my FSB reverts back to 100 when i set the fsb to 133...sometimes, even @ 110 the FSB goes back to 100...now what's up w/ that?

I have a MSI 845G max mobo...windows xp os...

help!..

email me any thoughts....thx! (removed)

shuttle systems are very small, do not provide voltage adjustment and have limited airflow. They are hot by default and especially hot if you plan to reduce fan speeds to make them quitter. They are at the end of thermal envelope, so you dont want to push it even further by OCing. They are not GOOD for overclocking. I dont know if they provide enough FSB/AGP/PCI ratios to make sure that your AGP/PCI is running at spec 66/33mhz when you OC your fsb to 133(I would assume they do if they support p2.4b+). But basically, dont plan on OCing your chip in a SS51 or SS50.
