Should I OC my E8400 to 3.6 for playing games? would I notice any difference with my system and new games? is it worth it?

System:

E8400 3.0 GHZ
ASUS PK5 C
RADEON HD 7750
3x1GB DDR2 800hz (I have 4 sticks but cant get the pc to start with 4 sticks)
Stock cooler

So as you can see I have a stock cooler,I know nothing about overclocking, so is it worth it and if so could someone tell me how to do it?

1. You'll get 20% more speed. (Although keep in mind this will not correspond into 20% more FPS since the GPU processing time also factors into FPS.)

2. What new games do you want to play? Keep in mind most of the recent titles are quad core optimized, but will still play well enough on a fast enough dual core. With that being said, you may have some difficulty on the most demanding titles (Crysis 3, etc)

So yeah, you may have some trouble on that one. (Normal standard for playable is 30 FPS average)

You can OC without touching voltage. Just take your FSB up until its 4Ghz Make sure RAM timings are good. It will do 4Ghz for free. Still its a lousy CPU if you compare to today's CPUs Your 7 years behind in technology.

You have nothing to lose. Your CPU is so old that you should really consider upgrading.

I just bought a i7-4770 today and I'm coming from a E7200. (I was running the E7200 at 3.5 or something, but recently I've been 2.5-3.1)

why not? if you are not please with the results, reset your bios back to default...

9x400 with 1:1 memory should be pretty easy.

Every E8400 with the later steeping I had ran at 4200MHz so why not oc it.
The one exon e3110 I had would only hit 4000MHz.

But you have to consider all the effort required to go into your BIOS and change the settings, I don't think it's worth the extra performance, because that can be a lot of work/research if you aren't familiar with messing around with BIOS.

What video card are you using? (That is a low resolution, but it would still be interesting to find out what GPU you have.)

You should definitely be able to get 3.6 ghz on the stock cooler (assuming the mobo is up to the task).

There are several guides on the internet on how to overclock ASUS P5K C. (Please ask us more questions after you find one of them....so we can help you more.)

Example: http://forums.hexus.net/pc-hardware-components/110267-c2d-overclocking-guide-beginners-p5k-add.html

Also check out some of the Youtube ASUS P5K overclocking videos. (Seeing someone click through and adjust the BIOS options visually may really help you)

You might have a little overclocking headroom on that 7750 as well. Probably only a few percent at best, but it might help make the CPU overclocking worthwhile.

I dont think I'd bother with a cooler. That chip really doesnt run all that hot. It's a very small 45nm die. Much bigger 45nm dies (ie lynnfield) can run that fast on the stock cooler. (Only just barely.)
