Ok, i know nothing about overclocking an intel cpu. (never used one).
My friend has a Dell with PIII 500 CPU, how do i overclock this baby?
I believe we can only increase the FSB, correct?
I couldnt find any document at Dell's website about how to go about increasing the FSB.

any help would be appreciated.

You are correct in assuming you can only change the FSB. As for changing it you will probably have to use jumpers on the motherboard. Check the manual if you have one.

p.s. - Dell's are /edit not /edit the greatest overclocking machines

you cannot overclock dell mobos as they dont have any higher selectable fsb frequencies in their bios. we are talking dell here...in my p2 400 it only gave me the option to boot up at 350 or 400 Mhz...no lower or higher....dell doesnt like overclocking...however ive heard that the proggie softfsb can increase the fsb on some...not all dell branded mobos. only way youd be able to overclock that baby would be to pull it out and install it into a mobo that allows user selectable fsb's

I dont have the manual with me at the moment, but I highly doubt if they'll include such information.

JayPatel is probably right, overclocking will only cost Dell more support service :p

Burn, do you know anyone who could overclock a Dell?
How about a Gateway?, my other friend has Gateway PIII 600.

My friends will be jealous of my new t-bird 1Ghz @ 1.33Ghz :)

[Question]
If you are interested in overclocking, why would you bother to mess around the brand names?[/Question]

Plus you are going to void your warranty.

Those were my friends' computers, not mine. And they got them 2 years ago.
As you can see, those are aging old computers, and we want to make use of them as much as possible before having to buy a new comp.
If they have to buy a new comp, will they still buy a brand name? i think so, coz their knowledge about computer is about as much as my mom's. Tech support will be very helpful for them.

Oh, and their comp's waranties were voided long time ago.
Once, they Gateway's HD grew Bad Sector like Rabbits, so a new one was sent. I helped installing the new one, but by opening the case up, the warranty was voided.

the Dell's warrant was voided because i open it up to install a new VidCard and more RAM.

so as a conclusion, should i give up on overclocking these babies?

if the m/board doesn't allow increasing the fsb then you'll have no other option! :(

the only way to overclock your dell is changing the fsb via software. you need a program called cpucool. check out this previous thread.

If this is the case, why bother overclocking the computer? Most computer vendor will void warrenty on any overclocking activities. I think you are just looking for a 2-pointy-ended needle here.

errr I didn't mean to say they were the greatest overclocking machines...oops. But you still can overclock them. Most of the ones I work on have at least a jumper to enable the "testing" fsb of 103. Some even have jumpers for other settings.
