Overclocking a Dell computer

I have an older Dell 8200 with Intel 850 chipset and a P4 1.9 ghz CPU. It comes with dells own BIOS which has severe limits to overclock and to change FSB etc. Can i flash the bios somehow with a generic BIOS or can i overclock the FSB without doing it in BIOS?

Not that I know of, but I have read that there is a modification that can be done of the P4 chip pins that allow it to boot at a 133 FSB.

Using the link that jkersenbr provided it is possible to overclock a Dell P4 system. However there are several variables.

First off, the motherboard has to offer 133 MHz as a possible speed. I don't believe the original i850's supported 133 FSB. However, it is possible that the board maker (most likely Intel) used a clock generator that does support 133 FSB. Your best bet would be to look on the motherboard and try to find the clock gen model number. Once you find this, then do a search on Google and try to find a datasheet. This should hopefully tell you what speeds are supported.

Second, the processor you're trying to overclock must obviously be a 100 MHz processor and must be albe to run at 133 FSB (preferably with default voltage). If it can run at 133 FSB but needs more than default voltage, then you can do the wire trick to increase the voltage but you want to be careful because the heatsinks in these systems are adequate but nothing spectacular. Your P4 1.9 GHz must not be a Northwood so it is highly unlikely that it will run at 133 FSB.

I must say, that is a badass guide. I love seeing stuff like that...gives me the warm fuzzies. OK..well, a woodie too, but you don't need to know that!

I own a PIII 550e that came in a top-of-the-line (at the time) Dell I bought. That PC came with 128mb of PC100 memory and some proprietary Intel mobo w/integ graphics.

However that CPU will do 5.5 x 150 = 825MHz at one notch above stock voltage on an Iwill BD133 mobo I have. Those older P3's were severely underrrated, apparently.
