overclocking a barracuda ?

i'm new to these forums (been browsing for a while though)
i read elsewhere that i might be able to overclock my seagate barracuda st380011a from 7200rpm to 10000rpm
i've just asked seagate (waiting for reply)
anyone know anything about this myth ?

I personally don't think it's possible to overclock a hard drive. At least, not just the hard drive anyways. I thought that by OC'ing your system as a hole, especailly the FSB, you increase the speed that everything else on the mobo runs as well. hard drive, graphics card, memory, cpu, etc.
So, maybe just by doing that you can get a slight overclock on the hard drive, however much that may be i don't think it's too noticeable. As far as I'm concerned there is no real possible way software/hardware wise to OC a hard drive's rpm's. especailly not from 7200 to 10,000 rpm. If i'm wrong, feel free to disagree and educate me some more. last, overclocking your hard drive also may increase the chances of corruption and possible data loss. Do you really want to take the risk?

OC'ing your sistem will affect your hard drives in no way whatsoever. The motor circutry and controller is seperate circutry from the rest of the computer, and regulates the RPM's of the hard drive, among other things. Although it may be possible to replace the chipset on the hard drive with one for a 10k Barracuda, it's not a very good idea. You might want to look into a SCSI setup if you're that desperate for speed.

Ahh. My mistake. I was just under the impression that everything connected to the mobo was increased in speed when you OC, and that's why HD's crap out if you go too far. And why SATA HD's can hinder OC performance. Guess not. lol. Thanks!
