Overclocking a AMD k6-2

I got this old AMD k6-2 processor, im pretty sure its like a 400 or 450mhz, goes along with a SiS 530 chipset mobo with all the jumpers to adjust voltage and stuff. I gotta pick up a thing of pc-100 ram still but once i got that i have an old 5 gig hard drive to use and a case and powersupply. You can read the mobo info here...

what do you think i should do and what about cooling? Its got a standard heatsink w/fan and thermal paste.

back when I still had one of these, I was lucky to get another 50 mhz over rated. I wouldn't bother overclocking it.

It's not hard to get 100 Mhz out of that chip, but the stock cooling just won't hack it.

I managed to take a K6-2 450 to 550 with a modern Heatsink, but had to remove the heatspreader on the CPU.

If you are only interested in extending the life of the motherboard in question, then look into whether you board supports the K6-2+ Mobile CPU. I had one of the K6-2+ 450Mhz CPU running at a happy 577Mhz for two years without incident. At that speed, it's about as fast as a Pentium III 700 Mhz. These CPU's are still around 35 dollars on-line.

My last go around with these was on a VA-503+ and I had about 6-7 different chips through it. It seemed IIRC, that less than 400mhz chips would not oc worth a damn. But 400 and above cpus, all topped out around 530-550.

assuming i bought a better heatsink (reccomend one for me) how far could i take it up to without having it get complicated, and what about the ram and stuff, how do i overclock that if at all and what would i need, right now im just lookin to get this thing runnin cus the p3 733 i have right now is fallin apart, things are breakin on the mobo and its gettin slower by the day

Any Socket A heatsink should work fine. They will also be much better than anything available back when Socket 7s were new as well. In fact, recently I saw a k6-2 500 being serviced and was shocked how puny the heatsink was. It was easily less than half the size of a standard SocketA heatsink. Which makes me think that you'll need to check how much space you have around the socket. You probably have Caps sticking up that will limit your choices.

My sister is still running this and i OCed her processor from 450 to 516 with only 1 over stock voltage on a VA-503A m/b and stock cooling with no case fans and decent temps. Ah GOOD TIMES!!!! (She is only 13 and not really into computers so it gets by)

That's an old processor. don't waste your time overclocking that vintage machine. Even if you do that won't see aby benefit. Get an athlon Xp Mobile and a new Mboard, dirty cheap combo, excellent OC.

I've got a golden orb and a EDIT: K6-2 500 I'd let go for almost nothin'+shipping. PM me if you want them 🙂

i only got about 50-100mhz on my chip. i had the stock cooler on mine without the heatspreader and it ran fine.

once i get all the parts together how do i go about overclocking, i know there are jumper settings for voltage and stuff but im not exactly sure what to set them at.

it seems the processor is a 350mhz it says K6-2/350 on the chip, what do you reccomend as far as bumping up the voltage i can do 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 2.5, 2.8, 2.9 and 3.3

Anything over 2.5v will seriosly affect the lifespan of the chip, so 2.5v or lower is safe.
