Overclocking a AMD 64 (newer 90nm cores)

Ok, well i have 2 questions

the first is, im going to be getting an Asus A8N SLI Deluxe mobo (and im not changing from asus, i love their products, and i know its not the best to overclock with)
But, with that in mind, whats the better CPU to get?

Im torn between the 3700+ (san diego) 2.2GHZ 1mbL2 Cache
or the 3500+ (venice) 2.2GHZ 512kbL2 Cache
or the 3800+ (Venice) 2.4GHZ 512kbL2 Cache

with that, the 3700 is the one ive been leaning towards, just because of the 1mb L2 Cache, but if you guys have any other opinions, tell me............

My second question goes right in line with the first

I was going to get a FX-55 (because of its clock speed) but ive decided to save $500 and get a lower one and overclock it to the max (hence the choices above)

My only question was this:
How fast can a CPU overclock?

I mean, lets say i get an awesome cooling system, and i can keep the temps down, will the CPU overclock for as fast as you want, up until the temps reach to high, or is there other factors that contribute?

If heat is the only problem, then would a liquid cooling system help me squeeze out any more power from any of those cpu's that a air cooling solution couldnt?
Or no?

Thanks

3700+ for sure.

I would try a good air cooler first before moving to water. Something like a ThermalRight XP90C or a XP120 (both perform very similarly). You may get the overclock you want without having to use water.

3700+ SD are getting 2.7GHz+ on air.

yea, ive been hearing some good stuff about the 3700+, so ill stick with it

about the cooling, i am planning on getting a XP90C with a 92mm Cat fan (52CFM's at 21dba), so that should be more then enough to squeeze alot of extra juice out of the cpu??

also, does anyone have any experience with overclocking on an A8N SLI Deluxe? is it overclocking friendly?

thanks

Fan is fine.

The A8N is a good overclocking board; it's just a little less capable in the memory overclocking department than DFI. I think the ASUS boards still have problems running certain memory configurations in 1T mode.

well, thats where i get lost when it comes to overclocking, dealing with the RAM..... but will i still be able to manage a good overclock (hopefully 2.6GHZ) with the Asus?

thanks for the help

Yes you'll get a good overclock. Lots of people like the A8N Deluxe; great board, and I wish my DFI had a fanless NB heatsink.

Interesting...I have an Asus A8N Deluxe board that I'm using with an AMD 2600+ that I have overclocked. Atleast I believe it would be the same board that your speaking of. Has it been aroudn a while?
I've been usign the dual ram access feature as well with 2 sticks of 500 megs.

Reason I ask is because I use my computer for everyday stuff as well as for my project recording studio in a dual boot setup and getting motherboards to be stable with my recording interface and soundcard is really important.

If I could drop in one of these much higher end AMD chips into a board i already have with ram already to go then that would be a super cheap upgrade. Which chips do you recommend? That 3700 you mention looks pretty sweet. how much performance wise would I increase from going from my 2600+ chip i have now?

Sorry to hijack your thread. I've been building PCs for a long time ever since my dad was doing it when I was younger but I haven't researched stuff in a year or so.

I know this doesn't help much, but I have had my Asus A78NX Deluxe (Socket A) up to 190 FSB stable. Was actually the CPU holding it back (tried it in a friends Abit). I have also had my Asus 9600XT well above stock speeds. I am also very happy with Asus products. (Still running the mobo at 186 FSB)

my a8v deluxe overclocks like crazy, but the new bios's are totally fvcked, so its almost imposible to overclock.

basically, how overclocking works, is: the more volts you give it, the higher it goes. but, the more volts, the hottter it getts, so the better cooling you need. most people here have air, but some have water, but almost everyone recommends only doing at 10% voltage increase regardless of temps, because more will decrease the life of your cpu to the point where you will have to upgrade or get a new cpu before you want to. so, with a venice, dont go above 1.55v.

with that xp-90c you will get up to 1.55v and if ypu have a good case, it wont go above 40c. just make sure you clear the dust out of it every once in a while. mine went up 8c after it filled with dust.
