I have a 3D Prophet 4500 (based on the Kyro II chipset) and I was wanting to look into overclocking it (for future reference. If I dont ask now, I'll forget). I was wanting some advice of how far I can go on the stock fan, if I can actually remove the stock fan and any past experiences with overclocking this card would be really helpful.
Ive read up on gf2/3 o/c ing and this card seems to be a different kettle of fish in way of getting the performance benefit. So, any info will be helpful.

PS. I have no money and if I did, at this present moment in time a graphics card upgrade wouldnt benefit me. (protecting my high blood pressure)

From what I remember, overclocking this card doesn't do much for performance. Mine overclocked to 190, and there's a voltage mod you can do to get it higher, but it's probably not worth the effort. That card's performance scales pretty well with cpu power.

Did you need any extra cooling on it? different fan? or did you just have good air flow in the case?

Overclocking the card is quite difficult as the core's dont seem capable of more than 185-190mhz whereas the memory should do better. I had a 4500 which even with a big heatsink on the core could manage more than 183mhz.

I have my Powercolour KyroII at 185MHz.... i'm sure it could go slightly higher, but havn't tried it. I got minor performance increases, mainly in fill-rate.

Cheers

How far can the Hercules stock fan take me? If Im lucky and have a good one that overclocks well, will I need a more powerful fan ?

Firstly, make sure you have the new 15.84 drivers (they fix bugs and give a small performance boost.) Go to ftp://ftp.hercules.com/video/exe/KYROBASED/ to grab them. Then, just try increasing increasing the clock bit by bit. Test in 3dMark to check for corruption of graphics. You'll probably get past 180MHz with the standard HSF.

Cheers

I have just installed a 32mb vividxs into my machine (sold my elsa ultra and getting a ti4200) and I cannot get past 180mhz with stock cooling, so I doubt even with decent cooling I will get past 185. The core is always the limit on o/c the kyro cards but heat is rarely a problem, I have a gpu cooler coming for my koolance case I will try with that.

You guys have really hit the spot with that info. Much appreciated.

I was thinking of getting a Tt Crystal Orb and using some AS3 on it. Thing is, does the C Orb fit on this chipset and whats the will the C Orb fit future graphics cards? Seeing as the GeForce4's have changed the trend of coolers..
