overclocking 7970 ghz

I have a gigabyte 7970 ghz edition. Some youtube video said that 1200/1600 should be attainable for anyone who has this card. I tried using it and lo and behold I got freezing and crashing in Battlefield 3. Can anyone give my the basics of overclocking? I am pretty new to this

I see Gigabyte in the tags, but what model exactly do you have? Is it a reference model card? Some 7970's have locked voltage and 1200MHz would be a stretch. Do you know if your card has adjustable voltage?

Could be locked or you have not added voltage. Make sure you have the power control settings to +20 and start upping the voltage. 1200mhz is pretty lofty expectations. If you can get to 1100 be happy

Only bump up slowly, if it crashes at 1200mhz then lower it.

So start off at stock. Bump up the core clock 50mhz at a time, when it crashes, slowly back off 20mhz at a time, when it stops crashing, lower it another 10mhz to be 99.9% sure it is stable.

Now go onto the memory clock, this isn't as effective as overclocking the core but still worth it. Do the same to this as you have to the core and see what you can get.

Uh, it's a Ghz edition with the 3 fan Windforce cooler, that's all I know... I will look at the box later and check for model number
