Overclocking 6800GT BFG

My BFG 6800GT can handle 420/1100 for everything but HL2. It can run all the 3dmark tests over and over, and I can play Unreal Tournament 2004 until I'm blue in the face. However, once I start playing HL2, forget it - the game will lock up within a couple of minutes. In fact, I've had to set it back to 370/1000 for HL2 to be able to play without lockups.

I remember reading somewhere that a game like Doom 3 (which I don't have) doesn't play well when overclocking a card - could that be the same issue with HL2?

Use RivaTuner to monitor the GPU temperature.

You can use the instructions in this thread.

You can also have it log the temperatures so that you could see them even if you had a crash.
Then, after playing a game, you can see how the temperature changed.

Then, run ATItool?
Click on "Scan for Artifacts" and let it run for half an hour. Does it crash?
How high does the GPU temperature go?

The GPU temperature gets as high as 82 C, according to the log file. I tested it this morning with 410/1100. An interesting item in the log file is the very first number on each line. In my file, it's 80 - is that some sort of temperature threshold? I wonder if the card starts to get flaky at this point. I will run the test again, but at 370/1000 and see what temperatures I get.

Yes, it crashes quite nicely at 410/1100 😀

I guess I'll keep adjusting the core until it's stable enought in the ATI tool. Once I find that, I'll start adjusting the memory until I see some artifacts. Hopefully I won't blow up my card today 🙂

Those are pretty high temps...when I had the stock 2-fan heat sink on my BFG 6800GT my temps never got about 70 under load while running 370/1000. I replaced that with the NV5 (because it was way too loud), brought the clock up to 400/1100, and my temps don't go above 65 under load.

Reduce the clock rates until it can run ATItool scan for artifacts without crashing.

If it crashes even with stock clock rates, you need to improve cooling.

395/1000 seems just fine - doesn't crash in ATITool and hasn't crashed in HL2 yet. I'll probably start playing with the memory clock now. Stock is 370/1000, which is already overclocked above the GT norm of 350/1000. So I guess I should be happy with what I got 🙂

Get the NV Silencer 5. It will drop your idle temps to 49-51, thats what my friend told me with the same card. It will also improve mem/core clocks obviously.

/thread.
