Hi,

I own a BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC and I'm trying to perform a rather mild overclock. I'd like to overclock it just to Geforce 6800 Ultra speeds, so 400MHz on the GPU and 1.1GHz on the memory. I am using the newest drivers, 81.85 I believe they are, and I am using some coolbits guru3d registry hack I downloaded a while ago to unlock the clock frequency settings. I went to manual overclocking and then to 3D and set my frequencies as mentioned above. I go into COD2 and play a little bit. What I notice is every 5 minutes or so, the machine will momentary lock for like 3 seconds or so, and then resume normally. What I think I am also seeming to notice now, is that even when I restore the frequencies back to 6800 GT OC defaults, this freezing will continue. It is only when I reinstall the drivers that normal operation resumes (that I stop freezing for 3 secs or so every 5 mins). Which makes me think, I can't see how the new frequency settings are causing this, because if I return to defaults it continues this problem. Is this coolbits registry hack I have too outdated and there is a new way to overclock the cards or something? I just reinstalled the drivers and played for hours without any momentary freezes or anything. Is there a different approach I can take to overclocking the card (hopefully not involving any type of BIOS edit approach)

Thanks

I have the same card, same drivers, and same clk speeds (400/1100), but I don't use the onboard sound, I have an Audigy SB.
I had this issue before I added the sound card, like a 3-8 sec stutter in audio, but screen freezes? Then you appear where you should been if it hadn't happened?
This was with a 3000+ CPU OC'd to 2.2 GHz, not this X2, so the mutli core wasn't an issue then.
Try disabling the onboard audio, (if you use it, if not dissregard this post), and see if it continues.
If it does, then we need to check something else: (temps, cabling, PSU, etc)
If it quits, I recommend an after market sound card. it will also free up CPU usage, for increased gameplay performance, not much but some.
(maybe 15-30% tops)
And Rivatuner is a good idea, it has more accurate clks, and also a temp and clk speed monitor, which can tell you what your temps are (were) during gameplay. Which will show a more accurate reading, than simply alt/ctrl/del out of a game, where temps can drop off significantly, before you can check in display nview monitor.

thanks the both of you, i will try rivatuner. as far as the sound goes, I am using an Audigy 2 and onboard is disabled in the BIOS. Thanks very much for the idea though, every bit helps! As you were also saying, yes, the screen also does freeze. I haven't paid enough attention to the sound, I can recall if it cycles the few seconds of audio or keeps going.

I will try rivatuner anyways, thanks!

k8n neo2 plat... and so far i have no probs yet using rivatuner :).. however the only thing i dont like is that no matter how much i mess with these settings, i cant get it to use a 1000MHz memory clock when just doing 2D, its stuck at 370/1.1GHz. oh well ;\

When you set speeds in Riva, make sure you only adjust the 3D settings. When you run any 2D appl, it should keep the mem clks, but reduce the core clks to default. Once the mem settings are saved, there there, don't worry about the mem clks, pay attention to the core clks. The core should change when changing from 2D to 3D, not mem.
Glad you feel comfortable with Riva, I use it constantly, in addition to the CoolBits registry entry.
Once you get familiar with what does what in Riva, you can manipulate a lot of differents things.
If you need any assistance with Riva, and it cannot get answered here, try this thread:

I hope I haven't made a faux pas by doing this... since it's another forum.
Good Luck.
Edit:
I had that same instance arise in CS:S, I was using the 81.86 drivers, before I reinstalled the 81.85's, maybe, try another set of vid drivers that are also WHQL cert.
