Overclocking 5850, not getting artifacts with memory

My first time overclocking.

I got my asus 5850 direct CU top today. So I was overclocking with MSI after burner and GPU tool and Ati tool. I was only doing stock voltage. I got up to 875 core and start getting artifacts so I stopped. But with my memory I couldn't get any artifacts. I went up to 1320MHz, still nothing. I let it run for like 5 minutes. I did some googling and some people were able to reach 1280MHZ on the same card on stock. That was strange so I thought memory maybe wasn't changing but GPU-Z and Ati tools, and asus doctor said the same clocks. So I kept pumping it up until 1360, no artifacts but then after I close gpu tool my screen crashes. So I guess it was working and in hindsight it was probably bad to crank it up so high on stock.

So why aren't I getting artifacts on my memory overclock? Should I bench longer? Core artifacts showed up within a minute. Since I don't know my max i'm probably going to get with 1230 MHZ for memory?

I wouldn't go any further. I doubt a few clocks on the memory will have a big difference.

memory does not artifact anymore. AMD cards use error correcting memory now.

To test for errors you must bench the card with a game and when you start to lose performance you step back the memory overclock like 15mhz, and that should be your max memory overclock.

I would find your max core first then test the memory. Just a tip.

1300+ on the memory is possible, look at my memory on my card.
It will do 1365 before losing performance. :) I just keep it at 1300 day to day.

Oh haha. That would have been good to know. I did test core first. What generation of cards did this start with? Could I have possibly damage my card then? Time to start some benching then, i guess. Thanks.

No , I dont think it will, its actually made not to. :) I had mine at 1400 at one point, but it was loosing performance.:)
Good luck.

If you own mass effect .. run that.. it will show even the slightest instability in your OC.

The memory on most HD5850s won't go past about 1225-1250. It's not directly comparable to Happy's 5750. It would be nearly impossible to hit anything above 1300 without error correction kicking in. The Asus may be able to do 1280 - that would be high but it's a good card.
