I plan on overclocking my 1 ghz tbird that I'm getting. I am getting it with the abit kt7a-raid and a taisol 742. The question is what do I have to do? I first connect the L1 bridges with a mechanical pencil. Than I apply arctic silver. From there how would I do a processor burnin that I've been hearing about, and also how will I know if the comp is stable. Same thing with my video card, how will I know when it is stable enough to be sure that it works fine. Is there any stability tests I can put them through?

johneetrash has got it pretty much right, just run a lot of CPU-intensive programs for a couple days, if it doesn't crash, you know it's stable.

Also, you may actually want to try connecting the bridges with something harder than a 0.5mm HB mechanical pencil, harder lead seems to work better (i.e. 5H). I haven't tried it personnally, but I will be in the next few days.

Oh, and if you need any more O/Cing advice or anything, cruise on over to the CPU-Processors & Overclocking forum.

Hey bud, your name rocks!!!! Got a little proggie for ya that I stumbled across yesterday called Hot CPU Tester it tests your cpu for up to 6 hours running Pi,prime numbers, fibonacci, and complex matrix maths. Pretty much keeps your proc at 100% usage.Make sure you read up as much as you can on this stuff before you jump in! I just assembled my first rig(having zero experience, mind you) and I learned so much from the folks here at anandtech.Got my T-bird 1 gig riding at 1184(11.5x103)She dont like much more than that, but hell this sure is fun!

Peace

rc5: a low priority program that is very cpu intesive...its working on cracking 128bit encryption, i think....

When I want to test my CPU with it's new speed, I use SETI, RC5, and about three of those "CPU Stability Test" programs for about a week.. With that "CPU Stability Test" running, however, you probably won't be able to do much else.. If you're just running it overnight or something of that sort, it'd probably be best to just run SETI, RC5, and loop a game demo.
