Let's say you had 3000-5000 to build your dream machine. What would you build and why?

this is purely for fun. i'm curious

Well considering I just bought a E7200 yesterday...I'd say if I were to actually OC the thing, I would want it to go up to 4GHz on air. That would just be for pure fun though.

My dream would be at least dual Quad optys and being able to overclock them just like a single cpu board.

Since it is a wet dream I will jsut stick with my overclocked dual 880s.

I tried to make my dream computer based on your $5000 limit... but I've never looked at 30 inch monitors before and I did that near the end, it blew my budget. Albeit, I would personally probably use onboard sound (more like a standalone card on this mobo) and skip giving creative labs $400 for something my untrained ears cannot even hear.

$350 CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 Yorkfield 2.66GHz 12MB L2 Cache

$500 MOBO: ASUS Striker II Extreme LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI DDR3 ATX Intel Motherboard

$700 GPU1: BFG Tech BFGEGTX2801024OCXE GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported
$700 GPU2: Same as above in SLI.

$300 HDD1: Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
$300 HDD2: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

$150 MOUSE: a G5 and a G7

$100 KEYBOARD: Logitech G15

$400 CASE: Antec Twelve Hundred Black ATX Full Tower

$200: About 2 to 6 different CD/DVD drives depending on quality

$400 SOUND CARD: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro 7.1 Channels PCI Interface

$1500 MONITOR: Gateway XHD3000 Black 30" 6ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen HDMI LCD Monitor w/ 6-port USB Hub and Tilt Adjustment

$300: some sort of liquid cooling system for max OC

$unknown: a large soundproof compartment to keep this beast in

Total: $6000

The only thing I skimped on was the CPU and the HDD, maybe get a SSD if youve got more money.

RAWR... i took down erinyes. Gonna make a new one. :p

I have 2 more servers, quads, overclocked to 3.6 and 3.8 respectively. However those arent my dream systems, unless you dreaming of an uber NAS.

My next dream is Neha rig.

I don't have a single dream machine, but really a pair. Pricing pulled out of thin air and rounded up or down depending on if my left ear itches. Not going to add in monitors, operating systems or peripherals into the cost.

Main rig:
$350 Q9450 (why not)
$40 Scythe Ninja heatsink
$130 random budget P45 chipset board (haven't looked into it yet)
$160 8GB DDR2
$230 MSRP for BFG 9800 GTX+
$25 Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 (will it work on GTX+? who knows)
$20 budget for misc little heatsinks for video card
$30 Samsung SATA DVDRW (known to be quiet)
$300 300GB WD VelociRaptor
$180 1TB Samsung (Razorfist's $300 is so 2007)
$80 Antec Solo case
$40 budget for misc quiet fans for case and video card
$100 BFG LS-550 PSU
=$1685

LAN party rig:
$350 Q9450
$40 Scythe Ninja heatsink
$130 Asus P5E-VM HDMI motherboard (until a better mATX board comes out)
$80 4GB DDR2
$700 BFG GTX 280 OCX
$100 slimline slotload DVDRW
$10 notebook optical drive adaptor
$300 300GB WD VelociRaptor
$180 1TB Samsung
$130 BFG LS-680 PSU
$400 estimated budget for custom built case (not modded, but from scratch)
=$2420

So, both my systems can be built for an estimated $4105. BTW, these "dream" systems are eerily similar to my two rigs in RL:

Main rig (picture)
E6750 CPU
Scythe Ninja heatsink with Thermalright bolt-thru kit
Abit IP35-E motherboard
4GB OCZ RAM
ECS 8800GT (choosen because it came with an Accelero S1)
Antec Solo case (with Yate Loon fan, etc.)
some old Benq DVDRW
WD Raptor X HDD
750GB Samsung HDD
Corsair TX650 PSU

LAN party rig (picture)
Xeon E3110 CPU
Thermaltake Golden Orb II (chosen because it fit and was free :p )
4GB OCZ RAM
Asus P5K-VM motherboard
BFG 8800GTS 512MB
Samsung DVDRW
WD Raptor X HDD
500GB Seagate HDD
Antec NeoHE 500W modular PSU
Aspire X-Qpack2 chassis

My dreams will not be limited by your price limitations. I dream for Roadrunner.

That said...my current rig is pretty damn good coming from my old laptop and the upgrades I would purchase would be a full watercooling setup, an increase in ram, 2x4870s for Xfire and a couple of SSD drives.

I would, uh, buy a time machine and bring a future computer from future that utilizes photons to carry and process information. I'd like to overclock it, and I wonder how much it would produce heat.

If we think about something like gaming, the best computer will have different parts in 3 years from now.. so much for dreams when all the tech seems to improve all the time, which as a fact is quite a dreamlike situation.

My dream machine is actually going to be built this summer. I have all components ready. I wait for some custom work and it's going to be put together.

system:

qx9650
4gb ddr3
790i mobo
2 x 9800gx2 quad-sli (have these now) OR 3 x gtx 280 tri-sli ; btw... what's better for gaming at 2560x1600?
2 x raptor x raid0 (system)
4 x seagate 1tb raid0 (storage)
1 x plextor dvd/rw drive
asus xonar d2 (tossed my x-fi elite pro for this card... best decision ever!)
thermaltake 1500w psu
dell 3007wfp-hc 30" monitor

cooling:

custom ss phase change unit for the cpu is getting built as we speak, with hx loop for water chilling.
2 laing ddc ultra in series, pushing water through 6 hdd waterblocks and mobo mosfets (don't bash me, hdd blocks are really restrictive). rad is a black ice gtx gen2 480, chromed.
1 laing ddc ultra pushing water through the gpu's, then into the other 2 black ice gtx's gen2 480 rads, also chromed, then through the water chiller and back into the loop.
all water tubing is tygon, all blocks are copper.

case:

2 x a-plus black pearl wcr edition full tower cases glued together, one next to another. much bigger than a mm case.
the left case will hold all the water cooling stuff, the right case will only hold the system and custom ss unit.

I would love a Pentium M 780 + the best socket 479 overclocking board(probably an Asus board with the C479 adapter). It wouldnt be one of your average supped up PCs.

QX9650
GTX 280
WD VR 300 GB

Otherwise i have everything i want, for the most part.

If i wanted to go insane, maybe switch to 8 GB DDR3-1800 or DDR3-2000 & new P45 DDR3 mobo, as i know i'd have great fun tweaking the DDR3 there.

No need for $4k...

-Silverstone TJ-07 - $300
-Watercooling stuff - $400
-Nice P45 Motherboard - $200
-E8500 - $200
-4gigs of memory - $200 (didn't bother to check pricing, so whatever)
-9800 GX2 - $450
-Power Supply - $150
-Blu-Ray burner - $200 (this is really borderline even with infinite funds since many have home theaters)
-VelociRaptor - $300
-1TB Samsung F1 - $180
-ASUS soundcard - $100
-Logitech z2300 - $100
-MX-518 mouse - $25
-Wired keyboard - $20
-That Doublestar 25.5" monitor everyone raves over - $550

Total is $3375 and I don't think I could have a better computing experience at any price - dealing with quad overclocking for no gaming performance improvement, the hassle of Multi-GPUs, or the space issues of a nice receiver-powered audio system wouldn't be worth it to me, nor would "high-end" mice or keyboards. And personally, I don't want a 30" display and the GPU demands - if I can't game well at native at any price what good does it do me?

hehe.. okey i wanna get greedy to.

i want road runner with a mini nuke generator to power that sucker.

Id hate to see the energy bill on it, as well as the cooling cost for that room.
