Bought an OEM Opteron 170 from Monarch, and a DFI Lanparty from newegg. Have 2x512 Patriot DDR 400 2-3-2 memory.

I need help guys! I havent overclocked a CPU since I had an unlocked AXP 2500. I looked around on the net and on these forums, and didnt seem to find any simple and clear (to me) info on how to overclock in view of mem clock, FSB, HTT, etc.

I read somewhere that because of my 10x multiplier, I should be able to run at 2.4 without overclocking anything but the CPU and the HTT. Since I use my machine for work, that's the kind of 'safe' overclock I'm looking for. I'd be sure to post my results from burning in. I have a CCBWE 05345PMW Opt 170.

I'd really apprecaite it if someone could tell me the appropriate bios settings to accomplish 2.4.

Thanks!

There are three main equations to be considered when overclocking

1. CPU speed = HTT(FSB) x CPU multi ie.. 200x10=2000 or 2.0ghz
2. HT(hypertransport) speed = HTT x HTmulti(LDT) ie... 200x5=1000
3. Memory speed = HTT x ram divider ie... 200x1:1= 200mhz DDR400

The only thing to know about the HT speed is to keep it at or below 1000. So as you overclock by raising the HTT, you must lower the HTmulti to keep it under 1000.

Ram dividers(memory clock) is used to run you ramspeed at a ratio of the HTT speed, they are labled like this on most boards

DDR400 or 200 or 1:1 = this setting keeps ramspeed equal to HTT
DDR333 or 166 or 6:5 = this setting runs ram at 5/6 the HTT speed
DDR266 or 133 or 3:2 = this setting runs ram at 2/3 the HTT speed

I'm a little lost myself.

I'm on a 939Dual-Sata2 which is a little unstable to begin with. I have CH-5 RAM and my memory will do about 220FSB MAX.

When I try to do 333/240 I get alot of blue screens.

Should I try to do 133 or something with a higher multiplier? Right now I'm a very stable DDR400 FSB220.

In bios
1. Load optimzed defaults
2. set memory to 166
3. Set Vcore to 1.35
4. Set HTT to 240

Done = 4800 for $380

Alternativly you can go though grurling excersise of overclocking and get much higher. The DFI link is great!

Unstable at 166/240 for me. Much more stable at 200/220.

Except I say set vcore to 1.45. I have all 4 of mine at 1.45 or 1.475 And my 170 has an XP90 (al) and runs 2xF@H at 2600 and 38c load !

Edit: and set HTT multi to 4x if it is at 5x.

what PSU do you have, my 380 watt antec isnt cutting it with my opty 165 (same steeping/week as your 170) it may also be my mobo.....I plan on checking as soon as I find a PSU on special

Just saw a big article in Power PC mag (I think that's the name - UK mag). Anyway, they said something like 56% of PSU's are unstable and or/don;t meet the rated specs. Seasonic scored very high. Worth checking out if you are in the market for one.
