Overclocked my new XP2500 mobile

I just got my new XP2500 Mobile CPU. I had heard all the hoopla about its overclockability so I decided to try it. Well after many hours of playing around with different FSB Frequencies, CPU Ratios, and CPU voltages, I finally got some stable settings.

I had gotten it up to 2.53GHZ using
FSB Freq 133 Mhx
CPU Ratio: X 19.0
CPU Voltage: 1.7V

this seemed stable enough for everything I was running but I decided to try Prime95 on it and it immediately failed the Torture test. So I bumped down the CPU Ratio a notch to 18. So I then had a 2.4GHZ system and Prime95 had no problems after that. So I guess I will be stuck at 2.4GHZ for now.

I have a Shuttle AN35(N) Ultra mobo with 512MB DDR 400 memory.

I guess 2.4GHZ is not too shabby especially with air cooling. I brought a TR2- M2 heatsink and fan.

Why did you choose 133MHz FSB and not something with much more bandwidth? Did you try 200MHz+?

Hey welcome to the forums DCuffee. That heatsink is what's holding you back. There's no way that thing going to keep anything running that high cool. I'm surprised you can get 2.4 Ghz using that hs. What is your load temp? And yeah, I would running at a higher FSB and lower multiplier.

Jayavarman,

Yeah I had a feeling the heatsink / fan might be the issue. I opted for the cheaper one at $22. There were a few that were better but they will like $39 and $59. I guess you get what you pay for. I will try to upgrade the heatsink and fan later.

I did try the 200mhz FSB and all different types of mutipliers and voltages but it would not stay stable. It just kept rebooting. So I'll bet if I get a bit cooler, that will change. Any recommendations for cooling that I wont have to spend over $50 or am I just fooling myself if I want a good quality heatsink/fan?

Also my load temp is 50C

Why don't you try a lower multiplier, and a 200mhz fsb, but give your ram some voltage this time. I would recommend setting ram voltage (vdimm in the bios) to 2.8v. I haven't heard of a mobile Barton yet that won't do at least 200fsb, with PC3200 and an NF7-S.

edit: Oops, I might be that Shuttle mobo holding you back. I've never liked Shuttle, and I'm sure I never will, but there are a few people who have their AN35N's running at 200fsb.

DCuffee,
There's two things I see in your set up that you need to address for higher overclocking.
1. You need to give your CPU more voltage, 1.7 is not going to get you very far. Mine is running at 2.0 volts. Now, I don't think the AN35N can go past 1.85(?). But give it as much as your mobo will allow.
2. When you bump up the voltage couple with upping the CPU clock speed, your CPU temp will go up sharply. Thus you need really go cooling. You will need good air flow in your case and good heatsink/fan.

I recommend the Thermalright SLK-947U ($40) and a Vantec 92 mm Tornada fan ($10). It will be quite loud, but that's one of the best if not the best heatsink/fan combo. Now if you want the ultimate heatsink/fan, I would recommend the Thermalright SP-97 ($53) and the 92 mm Tornado.

By the way, your motherboard should do 200 FSB easily. My nephew has the AN35N running at 210 FSB. But your memory has to be able to handle it.

Thanks Myocardia,
I did try that but it still would not stay stable at 200FSB. I was able to bump it up to 166 this time though after bumping the memory voltage like you said. So I am at an even 2.5 GHZ now with 166 FSB. I will play around a little more and see if I can twik it up a little. But like everyone has said, I need better cooling.

I was one of those few, but I will agree that board is not for "extreme" overclocking lets put it that way. The highest manual setting for the RAM voltage is 2.7. That board will do 200 FSB though... it just hits a limit @ 210.

DCuffee, wud you get for $22? That's about the cost of a Vantec Aeroflow which sould do you fine. Got case fans? What thermal paste did you apply to HS?

50 degrees at load is not all that high for 1.7 volts (I assume that's socket temp, if it's core your really not hot at all)

nice oc

should only get better with better cooling
i hope you can get 200fsb with that motherboard

good luck

Why not try for 166Mhz FSB. Should not push the ram to much but still allow a high overall clock speed.

my board doesn't give access to multis between 13.0 and 16.5 :(

it defaults to the lower version (5 through 9.5)

Lemme guess, one of the A7N8X series?
