Hi all: I just overclocked my Duron 600 on my Abit KT7 to a speed of 961 mhz, Sounds great right? ummm welll.. I can not hardly see any differance in speed in my 3d games. Also my Diamond video card has a benchmark program, on the 600 default CPU speed I show 117 FPS, and on the 961 speed I show 149 FPS. An improvment yes, but sure not 50% better?? In Janes WWII
Fighters 640x480,16 bit all graphics on high. I can barely tell any differance in the FPS readings. I drop to 22 FPS at 600 MHZ cpu, and 25 FPS at the 961 mhz speed. This is when firing gun at ground, (seems to make a huge diff in FPS). Normally In the game I run around 38-100 FPS depending on graphics on screen, but again can hardly tell any speed differance, the low FPS figures are both the same no matter which speeds I run the CPU.
My 961MHZ CPU temp runs at 42c after 5 hrs of 3d games. I think this is not bad correct? At 600 mhz I run at 33c after 5 hrs.
I am running 100MHZ memory, is my slower memory choking off my system? The memory is Silicon Mountain Memory SMM 2303-3491
I have a week 36 Duron CPU
Diamond Banshee Video card 16 meg onboard PCI bus
Taisol HFS CEK734092
El Cheapo, non Grande' 250 watt power supply
I will post all my bios settings
SOFTMENU III SETUP
Multiplier 8.5
CPU FSB/PIC 105/35
CPU FSB 8
Core Voltage 1.725 (lockups at 1.700 volts)
I/O Voltage 3.30
Fast CPU Command Decode FAST
Cpu Drive Strength 2
Enhanced Chip Performance ENABLED (1 fps speed improvment)
Force 4 way Interleave ENABLED ( no improvment)
Enable Dram 4k- page mode enabled (1 fps increase)
Dram Clock Host clock (host+ pci clock locks up)
ADVANCED CHIPSET FEATURES
Bank 0/1 Dram timing sdram 8/10 ns (WILL NOT run on any others)
Delay Dram Interval 2 way ( 1fps increase)
Delay Dram Read latch auto
MD driving strength HI
Sdram cycle stregth 3
Memory hole disabled
Everything else is the defaults for PCI settings
I have USB disabled

Finally not using the multiplier at all leaving it at 600 MHZ
I changed the FPS speeds only.
600 MHZ I show 118 FPS (diamond video test)
606 119 fps
630 122 fps
640 125 fps
708 135 mhz
I am getting 135 FPS at 708 MHZ and 149 FPS at 961 MHZ
Not a big differance with the higher cpu speed :(

I would throw the Diamind benchmark out with the bath water, however in the WWII fighters game I also dont see much speed improvment from 600 MHZ to 961 so......
My apologys for the overly long posting.

Just for one minute, consider your video card as the bottleneck.

Your banshee is already maxed out. anything past 600, the gain for your banshee/3d performance is very minimal. And, even though its a 50%+ clock increase, don't expect a 50% vid card performance increase even with a different video card.

Change the video card to a mroe modern one, and you won't have this problem.

Beaten by 1 minute by Mike! :)

Stampee, to give you an idea, i have a TNT2 Vanta. Which is only a notch or 2 higher than your Banshee.

Whether i have my Duron at 700Mhz or 1Ghz, the 3DMark score is the same. Cool huh? So i overclocked my Vid card, 50% increase to core and 63% increase in memory speed. Scores increased by about 1000 points.

thats like putting bicycle tires on your performance automobile. Dump the video card.

if your poor, get a geforce 2 mx or geforce DDR,

if not, get a geforce 2 gts.

you'll get Many Times the performance!

I've got to agree on everyone else that the video card is defenatly your bottle neck.
