I got venice 3000+ running at 2700(300x9)
33/44 temps
passes superPI 32M and does all 3Dmarks no problems, runs games no problems but fails Prime95.
went down to 2600 still fales prime95
is it not stable?

btw just to make sure i'm doing prime95 right, after I open prime95, i go to option, than torture test? right? i didn't touch anything else.

Yes you must choose the torture test, the blend version. A "stable" cpu will do fine around 12 hours or 24 hours with no errors.

Under torture test you'll have options to run blend tests, small ffts, large ffts. The small fft test stresses the CPU the most out of all of them. You should run the small FFT test to find out if your overclocked CPU is stable. If it's failing Prime95 then it's not a stable overclock.

Out of curiosity, how long can you run Prime95 before it crashes?

are you running blend, the same thing happens to me, blend takes almost all the available ram, the OS becomes unstable when there is no available ram

small fft's lets you run it in the background, the only disadvantage is it doesn't stress the cpu as much when your using your computer, but if its the only computer you have, its the way to go

Freezes?? Not just stops with a rounding error??? If it freezes I think it could be power related definitely..What kind of power supply are you running?? It should have just errored out not froze up....

There is a case about this...If you want to run blend the problem hapens when prime95 allocates all the available memory and then it may have to pagefile and the slowdown by shifting to the HDD causes the error...I dont think it would freeze the system though....

I need to know what power supply comes in the antec p160 case...I would think a high end OC like that may need a good 420watt or better...something with a good 20+A on the 12v rail at least....

The funny thing about my theory iis why doesn't gaems crash as they are likely more of a power draw....

Could be your ram too...loosen the timing, give them a notch more of vdimm or make sure they are not overheating..or all of the above...

generally in games, if it crashes out into windows or if you can move the mouse, its the ram, if it freezes, it the cpu

not sure if your directiing this question torwards me, im assuming since you metioned p160, I have a Antec Neopower 480 in my case. No error in prime95, It usually just freezes im guessing sometime in the night while im asleep.

Why exactly is Prime 95 considered the holy indicator of CPU stability? If I'm not mistaken in the more recent P-95 readme files they speak about how it has problems with dual core CPUs and the priotization settings (eg high, realtime, low) in windows...

But really, what is meritous in particular about Prime 95 over other programs, and is the following of P-95 worth it, or is it just that, people following one another w/o thinking it through more critically?
