Now you are just teasing us! 🙂
looking forward to it, from what most of us know, the 480 should still beat the 5870 in pure performance in the same ballpark.
I do however wonder what games are different and ofcourse why. To bring the TWIMTBP out in the open: this is a simplified yet normal argument for why the 480 would beat the 5870 in those games. But on the other hand we have Dirt2 where the 480 is slightly better even though from all acounts 5870 has had more hands on time.
So what is it with game engines and could someone PLEASE do a "these games, coming in the next 2-3 years, will be using THESE game engines" etc. This would imo be a much better way of knowing what GPU to get.
Well you got to realize that i am doing what i love to do. Who else would skip a night's sleep to listen to video cards and record their sounds?
BtW, the HD 4870-X2 is MUCH louder than either 5870. i cut the AA to 2X and it struggles less with Crysis than HD 5870 does with 8X MSAA. I might rerun some test at 2X MSAA for the HD 5870 because it was barely making 10 FPS. i think it was struggling with its frame buffer. It was painful to watch.
Anyway, you have to understand that i am interested in the same things you all are .. but there is not enough time in a day to run all of these tests accurately that i would like. That is why i broke everything i am doing into a series of grouped tests.
The first part covered the basic performance. GTX 480 beats HD 5870 in raw performance - generally with no matter to which dev created the game. A few games the 5870 wins but that might also be Fermi beta drivers.
So part 2 covers the overclocking performance and relative scaling of the 2 different architectures. Clearly there has to be a part 3 .. and 4
We gotta look at multi-GPU, SLI vs CF scaling and also the *features*
... Which one is the stronger performer at 8xMSAA? You gotta compare eyefinity and 2D Surround, and then you have to look at near-future games like Metro 2033, maybe Just Cause 2 and the Heaven 2.0 benchmark to try and predict how quick the future is coming
Unigine will have 2 games based on it's engine this year. One is Primal Carnage.
i have a lot more testing to do.
