Hey all,

The 1700+ i have now is running @ 10x200 with 1.5Volts (stock) so it should hit 2.1-2.2+...

originally it was going to be paired with a Radeon 64MB DDR VIVo from my old 1.2 ghz athlon system.
Unluckily it decided to die the same week i setup the 1700+...

I need a video card for this sytem...the problem is that the budget is tight.

My main rig sports a 9700Pro b/c i am a heavy gamer. This 1700+ rig is going to be my secondary family pc but it will also be used for gaming by my sister (pretty graphically intensive)...

I am sort of in a bind due to money isues. What would be a good card to toss in there? Should i just spend that extra $50 and get the 9600 PRo?

Thanks all!

Preferably 130-180

IN that budget you have Nvidia 5600Ultras and 9600 Pro's ($20 more dollars and u can get a cheap XT)

On the low end i could toss in a 5600Ultra for what i believe is decent FPS in current games...The games would be played at 1024x768x16 with medium-->high settings

I know the 9600PRo could tackle this easily but money is tight so i'm doing the "pro/.con" dance..

Thanks guys!

9600 pro for about $140 if you have the money. If you're really tight just get a ti4200 or something for under $100.

~$50 for a Radeon 8500LE or 9100 (same thing) is a LOT of video card for the money!

under $100 for a GF4 TI4200 is solid gaming performance for a modest budget

~150 most Radeon 9600 and GFFX 5600/5700 cards here. Not really that great of a deal when if you shop carefully you can get the following:

~180-200 GeForceFX 5900non-ultra (or just "5900") which rips to shreds anything below a Radeon 9700.

If the budget is tight, you simply can't go wrong with a Radeon 8500 or GeForce TI4200.
A Radeon 9600 is a good choice if you can afford it, but DO NOT get tricked into getting an "SE" variant. SE's are castrated and perform at about HALF of the performance of a regular card!

EDIT: Thought I'd mention here that if you ever need a new motherboard, there's some great nForce2 boards out there with an onboard GeForce4MX-440 which is a little below the Radeon 8500LE but "free". If you're careful, you can get one that's not only cheap but also includes good video AND audio!
For example, my Shuttle MN31N has the onboard GF4MX440 with dual VGA and the awesome SoundStorm audio. All for ~$70US after the mail-in-rebate!

the 1700+ is:

10x210 right now @ stock voltage (1.5V)
memory is corsair XMS PC-3200 C2 (not the LL expensive kind) but its running 2-2-2-5

System hangs after a few minutes of 100% cpu use (SOB or Seti@home) in Windows @ 10.5 x 210 @ stock voltage

1.525V = hang
1.55V = hang
Thinking 1.6V is needed for 2200mhz

Temps are 38-39C even with such a large overclock (after HOURS of 100% cpu use) so i'm leaning towards voltage as being the issue

oh yeah, all this is running on an Abit-IS7 w/ an Antec Tru 380

Thermaltake Tornado 11 i believe is the HSF combo. Its loud but works amazingly well (FOUND OUT my Zalman ALCU doens't fit on NF7 boards :|)

No Geforce Fx's thank you very much. I've grown a distaste for nvidia lately.

isn't the IS7 a P4 motherboard?

the radeon 9600 pro should work pretty well, i have the aiw version and am pretty satisfied with its performance (i also have a 1700+ overclocked to ~2.1)

Haha..yeah IS7 IS a P4 mobo...lol

I mean Abit NF7-S...dyslexia crept up again :|

Doesn't help that i have an ABIT IC7-Max3 also ;)

curious as to how high this processor will go also :)

-Ended up buying a 9600XT-128MB version from mwave.com. It's OEM so i saved about 35$..woohoo...
