What is it? Will it affect the performance of my game?

I decided to build a custom PC on cyberpowerpc. Should I include overclocking to run high-end games like The Witcher 2?

edit: Intel Smart Response Technology? Wtf are we talking about here. I just wanna PC that runs good and can play games that run today's and tomorrow's games.

I think a little Googling may be in order here.

Overclocking is the practice of configuring a component so that it runs faster than it is marketed (and sometimes designed) for. Computer components do things in terms of clocks; overclocking makes the component run more clocks in the same amount of time, hence the name. This, obviously, will make it faster.

So in your case, if you overclock the CPU and GPU of your computer, then you should expect the Witcher 2 to run at a higher frame-rate.

As for Intel Smart Response...that is one of Intel's features (duh) that allows you to use a solid-state drive as a cache for a higher-capacity, but slower hard drive. This won't actually increase frame-rate of any games or anything unless the FPS is limited already by the rate at which textures are streamed or something, but it will improve overall system responsiveness in other tasks.

What did you put together? This maybe a better candidate for the General Hardware section.

If you are buying a Sandybridge platform today, the best overclocking option is to buy a "K" series chip with a P67 or Z68 motherboard. The ram speed is not a factor anymore in overclocking the "K" series 1155 socket Sandybridge chips. So some DDR3 1333MHz at 1.5v is your best route.

Yeah, Google really is your friend.

Whether overclocking affects gaming performance noticeably depends on the hardware and the game and you can always overclock the thing yourself later. For high end gaming you want at least a quad core cpu clocked at 3.4ghz or better.
