***Overclock Ram/Ram Timings/4GB Ballistix***

Installed my 4GB Ballastix's. I get a lower score on my windows rating (down from 5.9 to 5.6) from my Geil (2GB) to my Crucial (4GB), this is down to timings I know, so how do I get the timings down from 15 to 12?


Is this the option in my bios that I should change?

I did just that windows performance test and my Ram rating went down from 5.9 to 5.6 :-(

May stick the old stuff back in.

Ballistix PC2 6400 is designed to run 4-4-4-12 @ DDR2 800 (400MHz x 2) @ 2.2v without a problem. Set the timings and voltages to that manually in bios.

I don't know, but I have my Crucial Ballistix (PC2-8500 DDR2-1066) at 4-4-4-12 @ 1066. I bumped the voltage to 2.25v. 100% stable. Ran memtest overnight. The JEDEC specs are 5-5-5-15 @ 800 1.8v and the EPP Profiles are 4-4-4-12 @ 800 and 5-5-5-15 @ 1066 both at 2.2v.

Yeah I tried running it at 889 Mhz and I got errors however I did not up the voltage. Will try that later.

The memory timings will be in 'chipset features' or 'memory config' or similar in the BIOS, once there you can manipulate a multitude of timings to whatever you want. TBH the vista performance rating is pretty lame anyway and doesn't give any useful info so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Sure I agree but I can tell it snot quite as "snappy" with these higher timings, but the extra 2GB (1 gb that I see) helps a lot in games, BF 2 is now smooth as, no lag, shame vista needs 3gb to run it smoohtly, but i spose every game soon will need 2GB+

889 is a tad high if you're at CL4 and 1.8V. No, it's VERY high for that voltage and timings for PC2 6400. It should be able to run DDR2 1066 at CL5 (5-5-5-15) and 2.2V though.

I am desprate to get the timings tighter down from 15 to 12, then I may look into Oc'ing the ram to 1066, you sure it will go that high?

what should i go for ? tighter timings or higher speed?

Note I am also Oc'ing my cpu, so I will do that first.

Seem fine to me, FYI you'd see more of a 'real world' benefit overclocking that E6600 over 3GHZ than ram from 800 to 1066 mhz (5-5-5-12 @ 2.2v should be good for 1066 but nothing is ever guaranteed).

I'm happy with my Ram now and CPU, I have'nt had to up the vvoltage on the ram at all to get those timings. I ran Oterus?(forget the name) for 24 hour hours while i was away, no errors.
