Overclock question for a P4 3.0 GHz 800E Prescott

Hi!

I recently won a P4 3.0 GHz 800E Prescott/ECS 848P-A Mobo on eBay (which I'll be getting soon) and I have a few questions:

1. What is the max possible speed that I can OC it to (considering the aformentioned mobo and the one below) ?
2. I have a GigaByte GA-SINXP1394 Mobo as well, so I'm wondering which Mobo would be best for performance, usage, and OC'ing.
3. Is a P4 3.0 GHz 800E Prescott decent when compared to the newer 3.4GHz+ CPUs (I mean... 3GHz is pretty nice, but I'm wondering how it performs when compared to somewhat faster CPUs).

I suppose that's all for now, and if this is in the wrong forum, I hope someone can more it to the correct one. Thanks in advance for helping! :D

I'm not familiar with either of the motherboards you mentioned, but as long as they have reliable PCI/AGP locks you should be able to get to 3.4Ghz without too much trouble (that would be 230 FSB with that CPU.) There are some great posts in this forum which will get you started.... Good luck!

I would use the Gigabyte mobo instead of the ECS because gigabyte has the sis655 chipset and ECS uses "older" tech northbridge i848, has higher range on vcore although both mobos, I think, can only go 2.6v on the vdimm.

I think gigabyte mobo has more and better feature-set all around.

you should be able to easily overclock your 3.0 to 3.3 to 3.6 speeds, so I should say it's better because you are upping the overall fsb of the entire system.

Try the 848p mobo first, if you don't have much to spend. I was able to run mine at 230 fsb (a 15% overclock). When you get more money, try the abit is7 (about $93 at newegg). It's a great value, and has numerous overclocking settings. The gigabyte 1394 won't even post with your cpu; the chipset is not designed for prescott.

^ Really? Aww... too bad. Well, I suppose I'll go set up the Gigabyte board with a Celeron 2.8Ghz that I have lying around for someone else. Thanks for the answers, everyone! I guess I'll see how far I can OC with the ECS board for now :)

Good Luck... The ECS boards weren't made for OC, they are in the value market.
Most of them don't even have the options to do it.

Notwithstanding as to whether you got a great deal on this combo but...sounds like someone (not you) bought one or more of these from Fry's in order to see if he/she could make a small profit by selling it on eBay. Every once in a while, Fry's will have a pretty great deal on this exact setup (P4 2.8/3.0/3.2 e or c, and ECS motherboard); I bought this exact setup (P4 3.2c) a few weeks ago just for the CPU, as the combined price for this package was about the same price as that for the retail-box CPU package from just about every reputable online merchant--at the time I bought it, the price breakdown was such that Fry's price for the P4 3.2c CPU was lower than online pricing for retail 3.0e CPU.
