you can

had an old 15" monitor which was rated at 1024x768 at max 60hz but I ran it at 70hz all the time

i only run a 85Hz on my 17" your not missing much

If you're using 1280x1024 you could try dropping it to 1280x960 or 1152x864.

My 17" MAG will do 85Hz at 1280x960, but only 75Hz at 1280x1024.

Try powerstrip, that's a good way to do what you want to do. But you can damage your monitor

I agree, but be really careful, I have seen a monitor fry when pushed too hard, that was about 10 years ago so chances are the tolerances have improved but still be careful.
