Overclock limited to 2.5Ghz?

My rig in the sig is currently overclock to 2.4Ghz right now. It's been running at 2.4Ghz for around 3 months, but it was running at stock for over 9 months before I started overclocking.

Today, I tried overclocking my rig to over 2.6Ghz, but I never got into the Windows log in page. I tried upping the voltage from 1.32 to 1.38vcore but I still couldn't get into the log in page. I then lowered the HT link and my memory divider, but I still couldn't get into Windows at 2.6Ghz. I could boot into Windows fine with 2.5Ghz though, but I never verified whether it's Orthos stable or not.

Could it be that I reached my chips max overclock already?

Thanks

You're probably hitting that chip's max. I had an X2 4200+ (I believe the 4200+ has a higher multiplier than the 3800+) that overclocked very well, and even that topped out at 2.7GHz. 2.5-2.6 for a 3800+ isn't bad at all.

my 3800 will hit 2.8 with a pretty high vcore of 1.5 (which i have found to be reasonably safe using it for 1.5yrs like that) but i will usually leave it at around 2.65 @ 1.42 vcore

my ran 2.6 in the start but now it only runs stable at 2.5Ghz, so that pretty much seems to be a wall, even if I up it to 1.5vcore it isn't stable at 2.6.

It might well be limited, if so, welcome to the boat of execrable CPU's. My 4400+ can't be stable above 2.46 Ghz, so I run it at 2.42 Ghz, and it has been so for months, no problems. It's just a very, very, very bad over-clocker.

It is kinda weird, my venice 3000+ ran with an FSB of 270 no problemo. When I threw in a x2 3800+ the max FSB is 260. I think 2.6ghz is the max for the chip, coz I know the mobo can do 270fsb. Maybe your mobo won't do a higher FSB though?

Thanks guys for the excellent suggestion and help.

My chip probably ran into a wall, or it's just that my motherboard is bad. I'll try raising it to 1.45vcore and see what happens. If I'm just going to get an extra 100MHz out of that much vcore, then I probably might just leave it at 2.4Ghz.

Could it be that I was running my chip at 2.1Ghz and 2.4Ghz for so long, reducing the overclockability of it as it gets older and older?

it' seems that o/c gets a bit worse over time. My ran stable @ 2.6 for months and suddenly windows wouldn't boot unless lowered to 2.5Ghz.

I could get my Brisbane 3600 with a Biostar tforce 550SE to 3.0 Ghz on air, but it was not stable/cool enough on stock. Went down to 2.6 Ghz, and it ran stable.
