Someone once told me that you could do that...is it true? I know about tweaking it but what about overclocking it to work like 5 times as fast?

You're kidding, right? A modem can't be overclocked, certainly not 5 times faster. A modem will connect at its maximum connect speed and no faster unless you find someway to hack the firmware and upgrade a 28.8K to 56K. In the US, modem speeds are limited to 53k, so even if there were some conceivable way to make a 56K modem a 280K modem, you could still only connect at 53K.

Maybe are you thinking of ISDN that has a maximum speed 256K?

actually no...I am not thinking of ISDN I am talking about actual 56K modem...you still connect at 53K but then when you surf and download and things like that it runs about 5 times faster...I have heard some people changing something in their registry to do this...

There are programs that optimize the Windows networking settings so that the TCP/IP stack is optimized for the size of packets one typically gets over a modem and not a network, but the performance difference is so small you won't notice anything. The slow download speeds is from the technology, not the Windows registry.

those programs don't really work that well...its got to do with changing the string that is used to cap the speed...

Wizard5233,

The registry hack you speak of exists in downloadable programs. The way those programs work is when u visit sites often, they are deposited in your cache, so when you revisit a site, the modem only needs to load new data. Thus making it look like your modem is 5 times faster. However, all of the old data is already on your computer. As far as increasing file download speed, Download Accelerators can help u achieve your maximum download speed by retrieving a file from various sites... Let's say a site sends u the file at 1.1k; if you use an acclerator u can recieve a little bit of the file from multiple sites and allow you to download at say 5.5k sec, instead of 1.1k. However, it is impossible to receive data faster than 53k...although software compression (which your modem does as we speak) allows for you to pack more data into the 53k bit rate.
