Overburning a DVD

You can probably do it, but would the player(s) be able to read it, that is the big question.

I would just get it into a DVD-9 format and use a program like DVD Shrink to shrink down those few extra minutes.

When you say DVD-9 format, you mean encode it at dvd-9 and then try to shrink/burn it to DVD5?
 
Yes, exactly. Tell your DVD Authoring program that you are going to burn to a dual layer DVD and then shrink it down from there.
