Over the falls without a barrel*update*

Suicides are not uncommon at Niagara Falls....Gromosiak said he believes the man must have been attempting suicide, given the way he went over and the thin odds of survival.

Well that would suck.

the first person known to have done it without safety devices and lived.

Wrong:

Roger Woodward, 1960. Not technically one of the 15, because he used no barrel and didn't mean to go. Roger was seven years old at the time, and he's still the only person known to have gone over the falls unprotected and live. (He'd been in a small boat that developed engine problems and capsized upriver.) Observers speculated that he'd survived because his life jacket and light weight brought him back to the surface quickly after the initial plunge.

konichiwa, i interpreted the "life jacket" to be a safety device and the claim by the article to hold true unless there is someone else.

People are crazy to go over niagra falls with safety devices.
Have you guys seen them? Those suckers are BIG.

Going down a fast moving river without any safety devices....or more preferably...a boat isn't too bright....but THIS!

It's not just the fast moving river part. it's the ~160(depending on the fall) drop that has lots of sharp rocks on the bottom that get's people. I don't think being in a boat would be too effective if you were trying to make it out alive on the other end. The only way I would go over the falls is in a specialy designed barrel with safety harness and padding out the ass.

As the article states, however, the 7 year old kid went over the Canadian side and this guy went over the American side. Apparently the American side is not as friendly.

also there are a couple whirlpools downstream. i heard those are really deep and can keep a person down there for days

would be one hell of a trip though...in a safety barrel i mean.

Where does it say he went over the American side?

I wonder what the rescue is going to cost him?

What rescue? He got out of the water by himself.

Some one had to bring him up, you can't just walk up from the base of the falls.

Looks like he is walking up in that picture as well

Update:
He put a piece of moss in his pocket after coming out of the water and said:
Thats gonna be a piece of memorabilia. (or something like that)

No one has ever survived a trip over the narrower and rockier American falls.

This guy has got to be either the luckiest or unluckiest guy in the world.

He's pretty damn lucky to survive but if he was trying to kill himself, that's pretty damn unlucky.

Fascinating.

Theu guy was said to be very cooperative with the rescue workers. If you are trying to commit suicide, do you get out of the water?

Yes, you can. There's a narrow access road that is closed to the public... it's on the Canadian side (where he went over... They were interviewing people on tv this morning who saw him go over and Horseshoe falls (Canadian side) was in the background.
Anyway, fine for going over the falls = $10,000 (I'm not sure if that's US or CDN currency)
